SWAP your Christmas stockings for wellies – more severe weather is on its way to Hampshire.

The county has already endured a downpouring today and unfortunately the stormy weather is set to continue right up to Christmas Eve, according to the Met Office.

Parts of Hampshire were battered by 50mph winds and heavy rain last night, continuing a spate of stormy weather.

Although skies are supposed to brighten up tomorrow there is still worse to come, with the Met Office issuing further warnings for Monday and Tuesday.

A spokesman said: “We have another area of heavy rain and strong wings moving in which will affect Southampton and Winchester from around noon on Monday onwards.

“Some of the more exposed areas could see winds up to 70mph on Monday night with 50-60mph winds inland. The rain should not be so bad in Southampton but it will still be heavy in places.

“With this kind of rain there is a chance of localised flooding but we cannot be certain on that.”

The Environment Agency released 10 flood warnings in the South East but none affected Hampshire.

But officials are still warning people in low-lying land to be prepared to keep their homes safe.

David Bedlington, regional flood & coastal risk manager, said: “Those who live in an area vulnerable to flooding should think about the precautions they can take to limit the damage a flood can cause to themselves and their property.”

As the Daily Echo went to press Southampton was expecting 1-2cm of rainfall while other parts of the county were seeing 3-4cm.

The worst affected areas were close to the coast, including the Isle of Wight, although Red Funnel confirmed it was not expecting any disruptions to its ferry services.

It follows weeks of storms that wreaked havoc across the county, knocking out power and pulling down trees, including one that hit a passenger train in the New Forest on Wednesday.
