A HAMPSHIRE man’s death will remain a mystery, an inquest heard.
Donald Hazell died aged 76 at Southampton General Hospital, just days after undergoing heart surgery.
Mr Hazell, of Valerian Road, Hedge End, suffered from high blood pressure, high cholesterol and an irregular heart rate.
The inquest heard doctors said he needed a heart valve replacement, even though the surgery was a risk because of his age.
Although the surgery was successful, he suffered major internal blood loss days later and died.
Doctors were unable to be sure whether the blood loss was the cause of death or if he had a heart attack and the loss occurred from attempts to resuscitate him.
He also suffered a stroke shortly after the surgery but it was unrelated to his death.
The inquest heard the family felt the hospital did not do enough to treat him but doctors disputed that.
Coroner Keith Wiseman recorded a narrative verdict and said Mr Hazell died in October 2012 after “essential and significant” heart surgery, but the cause of death was unclear.
