THE CHRISTMAS lights in a Hampshire street had to be turned off last night as hundreds packed the neighbourhood to admire them, causing traffic chaos.

Police were called in and requested the lights display in Greyhound Close, in Hedge End, to be switched off, after receiving numerous complaints from neighbours about driveways being obstructed.

The festive lights extravaganza has been a tradition in the community for ten years and has raised more than £30,000 for charity during that time through donations from visitors.

But last night, for the first time, police has to be called, as too many people flooding the street and its neighbouring roads to enjoy the impressive displays on offer.

However organisers have confirmed that the lights will be back on this evening, as usual, from 4.30pm, with donations this year going to Naomi House children's hospice in Sutton Scotney, near Winchester.

Those planning on visiting are being urged to take advantage of the free parking at Hedge End station or to walk if possible, to help avoid a repeat of last night.

Hampshire police said it would monitor the situation and request the lights go off again if more problems arise.

A spokesman said: “Some local residents reported concerns about traffic congestion due to the numbers of motorists visiting Christmas lights.

“Police [were] at the scene working with residents and visitors to help clear the traffic congestion as swiftly and as safely as possible.”
