POLICE are investigating a burglary at the Hampshire home of a man in his 90s.

The 93-year-old, who has served 35 years in the Royal Navy, discovered an intruder in his bedroom.

He shouted at the man, who fled from the address in Solent Way, Alverstoke, Gosport.

Among the items stolen were £100 in cash, bank cards, a clear glass jewellery box and jewellery, which included a very distinctive silver tie pin which was given to him on a trip to Peru over 60 years ago. There is an image of an “Inca” god in the centre of the pin.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Dermot McBride said: “This is an appalling crime against a vulnerable elderly man. He was left very shaken by the incident.

“We are interested in hearing from anyone who may have come across some of the property, some of which was recovered on a route between Vectis Road and Oval Gardens”

Anyone with information about the burglary, which happened at about 1.10am on Sunday, should contact Det Con McBride at Fareham police station on 101 and quoting ref: 44130478807.

Information can be given anonymously by phoning the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
