THEY were battered by high winds and heavy rain for a good cause.

Nine members of the Southampton Youth Campaign completed a 13-mile walk from the city’s Medina Mosque to Winchester, despite stormy weather.

They arrived at Winchester Theatre Royal at 2pm, six hours after they set off.

The group is run by Southampton’s Muslim Youth and has raised nearly £1,000 for the Islamic Relief charity. Husam Al Jabbar, one of the organisers, said it was a great success.

Husam, 18, of Bassett, Southampton, said: “The weather played a big part and probably delayed us by an hour. It was really difficult for the first eight miles but once we got to Winchester it brightened up.

“But it went better than I could have hoped for. It was a really good cause and was a lot of fun to be doing this with my friends regardless of the weather.”
