A MAN has tonight been charged with the murder of his twin brother in a New Year’s Eve brawl.

Robert Cerqua was charged by murder squad detectives last night after spending almost 48 hours in custody where he was quizzed about the death of brother Chris.

As reported by the Daily Echo, police were called to an address in Langdown Road, Hythe, around 9pm following reports of trouble inside the property.

They found Chris seriously injured, called an ambulance and he was rushed to Southampton General Hospital where he died just over an hour later.

Robert Cerqua, of Langdown Road, Hythe, was arrested on suspicion of murder at an address in Totton in the early hours of New Year’s Day after an inquiry was launched by the Hampshire Major Investigation Team (HMIT).

A post mortem examination has been carried out however details of the injuries Chris suffered have not been released by police because of ongoing interviews with key witnesses to the fatal assault.

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed that he was pronounced dead at 10.20pm despite efforts to save him.

The alleged killing sparked shock through the Hythe community where residents woke on Wednesday morning to find their neighbourhood had become a crime scene.

Robert Cerqua is due to appear in Southampton Magistrates Court tomorrow morning.
