Hampshire and Southampton have today been put on a major flood alert.

The city council has warned residents of the risks, and the Environment Agency has updated its flood warning map to show which areas have the highest chance of flooding.

The agency has issued a yellow wind and rain warning for tomorrow, with gusts of between 60 and 70mph and up to 20mm of rainfall expected across the south coast.

And a separate rain warning has been put out for Sunday, when up to 40mm of rainfall could fall on the region.

Daily Echo: Purple areas are major flood risk

Authorities are expecting fresh flooding problems over the next three days, with tidal flooding in coastal and riverside areas set to combine with more heavy rainfall.

Among roads closed is the A3049 which has been closed due to two feet of flood water just outside Stockbridge.

The worst period for potential flooding is predicted to be around 11.15am and 12.15pm today.

Areas which may see road flooding include Hythe, Hamble, Beaulieu and Marchwood.

Councillor Seán Woodward, Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council, said: "Since before Christmas our teams have been working flat out to keep Hampshire moving, and I would echo residents' thanks to those highways teams who have been working around the clock.

“It is anticipated that our maintenance teams are likely to be very stretched and it will be necessary to prioritise locations. I would ask people to bear with us while we do all we can to clear roads and incidents of flooding quickly.

"I would ask everyone to take particular care if they are travelling. Sudden, very heavy downpours can lead to roads and pavements flooding quickly.

"Please heed any warning signs that are placed on the highway. Do not attempt to drive through or walk through fords, and be extra careful driving through any road surface water as it may be difficult to judge its depth."
