A MAN has appeared in court charged with murdering his twin brother.

Robert Cerqua, 31, appeared at Southampton Magistrates' Court this morning accused of killing brother Christopher Cerqua on New Year's Eve.

Mr Cerqua, of Langdown Road, Hythe, confirmed his name, age and address during the ten minute hearing.

When asked by the court clerk if he understood the charge, Mr Cerqua said “yes”.

He also told the court he was self employed.

The shaven-headed Mr Cerqua wore a grey t-shirt during the proceedings and has tattoos on both arms.

Chairman of magistrates Trevor Vidler remanded Mr Cerqua in custody to appear before Winchester Crown Court on Monday for a preliminary hearing.

Mr Cerqua was arrested at an address in Totton on New Year's Day following a brawl inside a property in Langdown Road the night before.

Police were called to the address at around 9pm to reports of trouble where they found Chris Cerqua seriously injured.

He was rushed to Southampton General Hospital where he died just over an hour later.
