AN investigation is under way today after a lorry crashed on a busy Hampshire motorway, killing one man and seriously injuring another.

The incident happed when a 7.5 ton Mercedes box lorry crashed into the central reservation of the M3.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision, police say.

The entire southbound carriageway was closed for several hours as Hampshire Fire and Rescue rescued the two men free the wreckage and launched a crash investigation.

The injured men were taken to Southampton General Hospital, but one of them, a 60-year-old man died of his injuries.

Hampshire Police said last night that a 45-year-old man was being treated for serious injury but that these were not life threatening.

The force said it was unable to name the dead man or where he was form pending notification of his next of kin.

It adds at this stage it was unclear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident on Saturday near to junction 13 near Eastleigh, at about 4.53pm.

A fresh appeal has been launched today for witnesses to the accident to come forward as investigators from Totton road policing unit attempt to find out how the accident happened.
