Southampton mum, Sharon Ray, who met Prime Minister David Cameron about Help to Buy hits back at critics

Daily Echo: Prime Minister David Cameron's visit to Sharon Ray and her daughter Maisie Prime Minister David Cameron's visit to Sharon Ray and her daughter Maisie

A SOUTHAMPTON mum has defended her right to buy a home after criticism that she was too well-off.

Sharon Ray, 30, helped Prime Minister David Cameron promote the Help to Buy scheme when he visited her £135,000 two-bedroom flat in Millbrook to have a cup of tea last Thursday, as reported in the Daily Echo.

The initiative uses public money to help people get on the property ladder as a way of helping to stimulate the economy.

Mother-of-one Ms Ray, of Regents Park Road, came in for criticism on social media when it was revealed she is a sales director for Enfields estate agents who sold the flat to her, and drives a £33,000 BMW 3 Series convertible. Critics also said she was married.

One tweeted: “Mr Cameron and Ms Ray. Gobsmackingly audacious!”

Ms Ray later posted on Twitter that the BMW was a company car and that she separated from her husband six months ago.

She also said: “I have done nothing wrong, I work 39hrs a week, everything I have I have worked very hard 4. When was it a crime to work hard?”

The Help to Buy scheme has helped 6,000 people nationally enabling them to get a mortgage with a five per cent deposit. Ms Ray put up a £7,000 deposit and borrowed the rest for the flat.

Ah yes, I'm sure the Daily Echo staff will just pick up on a link and say 'it's all true'.

Does this count as one of the 'right' things the DE should be publishing (i.e. only the propaganda that you want published..) ?

Well according to the Land Registry the Home is Lease and not Freehold sold, it was Lease out for £125,000 for 5 years.
Shoong there is no propaganda its just news of a publicity stunt on behave of the Tory Party. Is this what state money for to pay for those who are on a very good living wage

BTW the 5 year lease was sold in 2012 and not 1213/4 so how can this come under "Help to Buy scheme" that policy never came about till last year and its not fully implented yet

I'm not quibbling figures or even if the Help to Buy scheme is a good or bad thing, as per usual you've completely missed the point.

The DE is not a post board for your political agenda.

Who the hell do you think you are to try and dictate what they print?

I suppose your yearning to control the press is coming out here.

So, let's add something else to the list of things you don't understand: Journalism & the free Press.

We can add that to Politics, Economics etc but unfortunately I don't think there are enough hours in the day to list them all...

The D.E. has the right to publish what the editor/board dictate can be written in the newspaper. However the public must have the opportunity to realize what political bias the news paper has. The fact that D.Cameron was more than happy to be photographed with the D.E. in hand shows that our Prime minister is happy Ian Murray has done a good job for the Tories.

Indeed, that's why the previous poster's link was removed. Comment on the story, posting links is lazy and is always to promote a political agenda.

There are 3 opportunities as you put to get the message across if you believe the DE to have a bias (and this applies to anything) :

1) Alert the editor. If enough people do it, he has to investigate.

2) Don't buy the paper.

3) Don't visit this website which generates for Newsquest.

And yet here we are :)
