PASSENGERS flying from Southampton are facing delays this afternoon after a suspicious packet was found at Edinburgh Airport.

The terminal was evacuated and a police cordon set up after the discovery of a ''potentially suspicious bag'' at 1.50pm today.

The incident has had a knock-on effect on flights to and from the rest of the country.

This afternoon's Flybe flight inbound to Southampton from Edinburgh has been cancelled this afternoon while another flight outbound to the Scottish capital has been held back.

Passengers have been told they will have to wait until at least 8.30pm and have been advised to contact their Flybe for the latests updates.

Bomb disposal experts are currently on the scene in Edinburgh.

Some passengers congregated on a nearby car park while others were moved to a nearby hotel.

Police have urged others not to travel to the airport.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ''Police at Edinburgh Airport have implemented a closure of the building and the access roads following the discovery of a potentially suspicious bag within the central search area at around 1.50pm today.

''The Explosive Ordnance Disposal are currently in attendance to inspect the item and officers are maintaining a cordon to ensure the safety of the public.''

A number of outbound flights have been cancelled and inbound flights diverted to Glasgow Airport.
