PLANS to build 59 flats at the site of a former church hall in Southampton will go before councillors.

The Drew Smith Group’s plans to build a three- to six-storey building at the former Chantry Hall site in St Mary’s will be decided on next week.

The city council’s planning panel will meet on Tuesday and run the rule over the developer’s proposals.

If they are approved, the new complex would contain nine one-bedroom flats, 46 two-bedroom flats and four three-bedroom flats, some of which would be affordable housing.

The site used to house the Chantry Hall, a centre for worship built in 1925 but destroyed by fire in 2007 and subsequently knocked down.

Developer Colin Warburg had brought forward plans for a £10million ice rink at the site, but that scheme bit the dust amid funding issues.
