A CAMPAIGN to revive Totton’s weekly market has taken a new twist.

Town clerk Derek Biggs has suggested holding a market at the West Totton Centre instead of trying to find a new site in the middle of the town.

The former Wednesday market was originally held in the car park between Salisbury Road and Testvale Park.

It was axed following a drop in the number of stallholders and was moved to a nearby service road, but closed for a second time.

Speaking at a meeting of the council’s planning and transport advisory committee, Mr Biggs suggested holding a market at a site known as the Bull Ring, which is bordered by a church, a GPs’ surgery and a dental practice.

He said: “We could have eight or nine stalls – the sort of thing Romsey has.

“There’s a high footfall in the area and room to do it, but we’ve got to talk to market traders and see if any of them are interested.”

Councillor David Harrison added: “We need to go for a quality market and should be trying to attract traders offering something unique.

“We should go for a one-off trial and if it’s a success we could look at making it a regular event.”

Members agreed that Mr Biggs should consult retail experts and look at various options for reviving the market.
