THE OPENING of a new accommodation block at a shelter striving to battle homelessness was recently celebrated with the attendance of mayors both past and present.

The mayor of Winchester, Cllr Ernie Jeffs, pictured, was invited to cut the cake to mark the occasion by the recently retired chair of Emmaus Hampshire, Alison Thompson, MBE.

Former mayors Sue Nelms and Chris Pines also attended and were thanked for their support over the years.

Ms Thompson thanked fundraising supporters, saying: “This marks the end of a six-month project to increase our accommodation to 26 spaces.”

The Emmaus Hampshire Community opened in March 2009 to help homeless people work towards independent living through volunteer work and education courses.
