Nicola Cortese resigns and Katharina Liebherr becomes new chairman of Southampton FC

Daily Echo: Nicola Cortese Nicola Cortese

Nicola Cortese has sensationally quit as Saints chairman tonight, after a day of speculation and rumour.

He will now be replaced by Katharina Liebherr, daughter of the late Markus, as non-executive chairman.

A statement issued to the Daily Echo said: "Southampton FC today announces that club owner Katharina Liebherr has taken on the role of non-executive Chairman.

"This follows the resignation of Nicola Cortese.

"A search has begun for a Chief Executive Officer who will take over Mr Cortese's executive duties.

Katharina Liebherr said: "With great regret we have accepted the resignation of Mr Cortese. He has done a wonderful job at the club and we very much wanted him to stay.

"A search has now begun for a successor. In the meantime, it is business as usual and we will ensure that the manager, the team and all the staff at the club have all the help and support they need."

That's a great shame. Hope Cortese finds backers and buys it. Katharina Liebherr as Chair can only be a holding position, probably pending a sale.

Thank you Cortese - ever so grateful for what you have done for this Club - you agreed a 5 year plan with Markus and you stuck with it. Good luck in wherever you go next. Well what's next - let's hope Poch sticks with us until end of the season - unlikely I know but I can always hope. Statement suggests Liebherrs are staying put and a new Executive Chairman is being hunted. Time will tell..........Always a Saints Fan and always will be. We will get through this we have been through worse times!!!

Dear Nicola,

let me be the first to thank you for the wonderful job you have done for Southampton Football Club. Your enlightened ideas, efficiency and willingness to recognise your mistakes, as well as to build on your many more excellent initiatives have been highly impressive. It's a great shame that you will not be continuing and I wish you the very best for the future.

Very very sad news. Now let's hope we can keep hold of Poch, IF he wants to stay. He stuck by NC during the summer spat, will he do the same again? If he leaves how many players will stick around? If the transfer spending is cut players might want to leave, claiming a lack of ambition on the club's part. Nicola was worth his weight in gold! I hope Kathrine has ambitions for the club and is willing to back it up with financial muscle.

Thanks Nicola for everything. You saved us from ruin and turned us into a club that is admired the World over for the way we play and the committment to youngsters.
Let's hope for a quick sale to a wealthy individual / group that will quickly re-install Nicola as Chairman. We will know quickly if that's likely if MP stays or goes.
I just want this season to end now. Unbelievable.
The only thing worse than this will be to hear that somehow Lowe is worming his way back in as some kind of consultant.

No doubt a great track record at St Mary's, but to throw your toys out of the pram when we are on the verge of something special is unforgivable.
MP's position is now in doubt along with our top players, very bad timing imho.
No one is bigger than any club but this man thought he actually was, this will see us fall from grace, but we will hopefully get another 10 points to enable us to survive this season.
The man has been great for us and I'd like to think that he will return with a new richer buyer for us to go to the next level, however I fear that our march to the top has ended.
sorry if this sounds negative but today is a very bad one for SFC

Without funding NC must have realised that he had taken it as far as he could go, that, I think was the final straw, he needed a couple of big money signings to complete the jigsaw to get us into the Champions League, that is probably the only failure in his tenure. We have much to be grateful for. As ohers have said no regrets, time to move on and keep the faith in the players, they are going to need every bit of help that we can give them, it is our duty to give our full backing to Poch. We need to convince him to stay.

EXACTLY! C'mon people, our owners are looking to sell, to cash in. The value of what they have depends crucially on our players. They will frantically be trying to hold things together until a sale. That means they will not just let the club slip. They will enforce contracts, that is for sure, to keep things safe until sale. And let's be realistic. Our club is a great business proposition. We are on the radar all over the world. Whoever buys us will have competition. Cortese is a great manager, but he is not the only great business manager around.

I suspect he (Mopo) must have known , as the release states that NC tendered his resignation in autumn last year. WTF do I know!

Don’t think the statement suggests that at all. Someone had to step in as Chair. The same would have happened if her intention is to sell the club on as soon as possible.

The immediate worry is who will be running the club for the next few days and weeks. Surely not Katharina Liebherr as she has a slightly larger company to run. She might possibly just use her solicitors or accountants to keep it ticking over pending the appointment of a new CEO. But the main job of that appointee might be to sell the club.

The short term is a worry as there does not appear to be any senior executive other than, presumably, a director of finance around who can manage the place in the meantime – Cortese ran very lean ship. That could be very bad for stability and morale and of course a particular problem at this time of year.

Cortese had a vision of a bigger Southampton.. I for one could see how he could make that happen with investment and belief and youth. True vision is a valuable skill and few possess it.. most businessmen just practice what they read in books about return on investment and focus on short term results.. so that probably (statistically) means we get someone who lacks vision and we sell the valuable assets and never achieve the bigger prize.. maybe thats what we should expect and be happy (better than where we were 3 years ago). We will always be a good provincial club but after 40 years of watching the Saints wouldn't it have been a brilliant dream to see the bigger picture realized ? feeling gutted. Maybe there is a rich visionary out there who wants to make something exceptional out of this football club and now would be the time to buy (before we lose all the momentum).

Cortese always stated that if the Liebherrs were to sell then he had parties interested, now he's no longer chairman perhaps he's now in a position to put in an offer as the frontman and new chairman elect!

Continuity is a rare thing in football these days, it's a gold rush game for the rich now and us fans have to sit and watch it all unfold as we hope for the best! When we peaked at 3rd in the Prem the Liebherrs must have known it was time to cash in on their investment. Maybe Markus would have lived the dream with us and indulged in his project further but what ties do his kids have to the club? We can only hope that some of NC's inventions remain and that we continue our upward surge. Our structure has been shaken up for the better and we're in awesome shape for an investor. We can only hope that it's one who can continue our growth. The spirit of the club is still intact, that doesn't just disappear with one man, but Poch will want to weigh things up in the coming days. For now we're in limbo!! The roller coaster continues but right now we're 9th in the Prem and taking a step back to look at the bigger picture that'stoo not bad!!! How will "The Southampton Way" evolve from here???

We will always be a good provincial club but after 40 years of watching the Saints wouldn't it have been a brilliant dream to see the bigger picture realized ? feeling gutted. Maybe there is a rich visionary out there who wants to make something exceptional out of this football club and now would be the time to buy (before we lose all the momentum).

If she wants to sell why oh why didn't she task Cortese with the task!? He would have been better placed than anyone to match the right buyer with the clubs aims and aspirations. The timing is sheer madness, she's probably already wiped half the value of her asset and the window is open with big teams coverting our prize youngsters. Appalling business.

Nah. To have control over who buys the club would be the ultimate position for him. He picks someone who shares his vision, is prepared to invest to achieve it and he remain as Executive Chairman - can't see him being unhappy with that.

Yeah...a girl who's Dad invested £14m to save our Club...is now running it. Apart from that, we have the same stadium, same academy, same fan base, same passion and are still top half PL.

I'll drink to that!
Not forgetting we also have a good draw in the 4th round of the F.A. cup Bill.♥

Nah. To have control over who buys the club would be the ultimate position for him. He picks someone who shares his vision, is prepared to invest to achieve it and he remain as Executive Chairman - can't see him being unhappy with that.
That only works if it is unconditional. She may have stipulated strict conditions he didn't agree to?
Anyway, that's all speculation and in the past. What's important is what happens next.

None of us know but from what little we do the most likely scenario is that she had decided to sell and Cortese didn't agree with her.

Certainly agree the timing is very bad business sense even from that perspective.
The timing would suggest she hasn't got a clue.

Who knows, but it wouldn't surprise me if Nicola, whilst not the owner, behaved in a rather autocratic way as if he was the owner. Certainly it is problematic for an owner not to have a seat on the board.

How could she trust him not to rip her off? He would obviously advise her to the buyer he preferred to work for. That would get messy.
I think we can all agree that he is not the easiest to get on with, although mopo seems to? When club/company was handed to her I bet there was all sorts if wranglings between her people and cortèse. She may not know anything about football but does cortèse? It's a good sign that she states a replacement will be found, proves she admits she will need help. I say give her a chance.
No way can she continue as Chairman, certainly not with any kind of involvement. She has a £7bn company with 37,000 employees to run.

Absolutely agree giver her a chance. We can but wait and see where all this goes. So long as no one has the authority to sell any of our players over the rest of the month (except for the usual suspects).

like many here I rated the don but make no mistake, money makes a successful football club and we are not short of that. If she wants to sell it wont be for a few quid and the promise of new tesco in the car park more likely a person or group that can spend 100 mil plus, so my question is, the problem is what?

The problem would be mopo leaving. A new manager will be appointed with new ideas wanting his type of player, this I think was downfall 10 years ago. Continuity is important at a club... Ferguson, wenger, moyes.

The problem is that by the end of the transfer window we could be without a Chairman, a Manager and a few key players.
Obviously, that is a worst case scenario, but the possibility is real.

How could she trust him? Well Markus trusted him to handle the purchase of the club and then as CEO. He was also appointed Chair of the Liebherr Trust so suggests massive trust to me.

Bearing in mind the sheer size of the Liebherr empire and Markus's dream it would not necessarily be about selling to the highest bidder but to someone best positioned to carry on the project. So yes, I can't think of anyone better to handle the sale than him.

Maybe. But in this worst case scenario can we find three sh1t teams to beat in order to safeguard Premiership survival? No doubt.

That gives us a good eight months to properly sort the club out before the start of the new season. There's an infrastructure in place that can't be easily undone, so no one needs to panic. We'll be fine. I think Man City were in a similar position just before Mansour turned up, and that didn't work out too badly.

She acknowledges that she needs a replacement.
For me there is so much negativity about cortèse, his tenure at club is littered with disagreements. Admittedly the club was in a mess and it was rumoured trant left it as open season and there was a lot of hangers on. I think he could have been a little softer in his approach to other matters.

We were talking about top six last week.....

I don't see any positives in this at all, particularly due to the timing. It's been incredibly badly handled. He will have been on a long notice period, some are suggesting he resigned three months ago. If he did she should have persuaded, begged, demanded, bribed him to wait until 1st Feb. If he refused she should have let him go immediately, a right sh1t storm would have ensued but not in a window like this one.

I sit to the side of the directors and he wasn't there against Chelsea or West Brom. He's always been there before. It's news to us today but not to her. Bad start to her tenure.

I agree. In principle, we only need another 10/12 pts to stay up, which would be the objective if the worst case scenario happens, and we should be able to get them.
There is, indeed, no need to panic and we might well end up better off in the end; but this is nevertheless something we could all have done without and it will undoubtedly put a big dent in the feelgood factor accumulated over the past few years...

Oh I agree - it's not good news.

But we're still a very, very long way from Skuntsville. Let's see what happens I guess.

Yes - hard to believe such bigotry still exists – although homophobia is still rife on here. Even setting aside the bigotry, just how stupid do you have to be as a fan to think it’s a good idea to so grossly insult our owner and chairman

you are trying to say that NC worked at SFC just for the money, surely not. a wealthy man in his own right didn't need to work at a football club `just for the money`. NC was/is a banker who had several wealthy clients and I`m sure that he would have made more money staying a banker than running a football club. he wouldn't have taken all the abuse he did from self righteous fools like you either.
you don't have to like NC, no one said you did, but you can never claim all of his achievements at saints were `just for the money`.
others did like NC and what he did/meant for the club, its called a difference of opinions. and people are entitled to their views without abuse from you. something you were complaining about the other day.

Are we to lay the blame at her door?
So there is absolute trust, he's chair of the liebherr trust, has a job for life if he chose but decides to bite the hand that feeds him? She acknowledges that she needs a replacement.
For me there is so much negativity about cortèse, his tenure at club is littered with disagreements. Admittedly the club was in a mess and it was rumoured trant left it as open season and there was a lot of hangers on. I think he could have been a little softer in his approach to other matters.
Maybe she refused to back his plans bringing the dream to an end? Not the type of bloke to hang around if he can't deliver.

He could have been far softer in many of the things he did, no doubt at all, but also no doubt that he took us to the Prem in double quick time. And it's not just courtesy of the Liebherr millions, football is littered with examples of clubs spending big for no return.

The appointment of the new CEO will tell us all. An experienced safe pair of hands = holding the fort whilst it's sold. A young dynamic person with drive and vision will show us she means business.

Sadly, I think if she meant business she would have backed Cortese, after all his track record speaks for itself even if many of his staff think he's a git.

Good points.
It is alledged that they disagreed over a £30m offer for shaw? I think it may relate to offers as he's decided to go in transfer window.
She is a business person so surely she wouldn't do anything to drop share prices?
Apparently cortèse has been persuading mopo to stay.
It's no secret I am not his biggest fan but like you've mentioned others have chucked money at promotions and failed. His record does speak for itself, however he does appear to be appreciated by her?

I come back to my original point if she didn't feel able to back his plans she should have given him the task of finding new owners.

If Poch stays then it could also be a good sign that Katharina won't sell any of our star players.

If I recall correctly, he was constantly undermined at Espanyol when his best players kept on being sold. No doubt Cortese's offer of a club where this wouldn't happen is something which greatly appealed to him.

At the moment there's a lot of tabloid transfer talk which I'll be taking with a pinch of salt, but if Katharina does start selling our star players it will effectively be destroying Markus's legacy and breaking the hearts of the fans who adored him so much.

My fear now is that the so-called bug scum clubs like Man Utd and Chelsea are going to come back for another try at Lallana and Shaw, and this time they'll find a chairperson probably a lot more willing to listen to them. If she's just a businesswoman who cares little for the club, she'll see them as nothing more than assets to be sold for profit. If our best players go, the wheels will well and truly come off this great project.

I think we need to just have to see what happens but very worrying reports that we accepted £7m for Lambert on from West Ham on Wednesday night and that Shaw will go this window to Chelsea or Man U for £20m. Sounds like a fire sale prior to selling the club to some gangster/former dictator with a dodgy mustache, suspiciously dark hair and a fervent desire to re brand us as Soton Snakes in an attempt to make our brand more marketable in Mogadishu. He'll pass the fit and proper person test despite paying for the club with Liberty diamonds - next Bond plot? Still could be worse just look down the M27.

From a business perspective this is complete madness and as Seed suggests appalling timing. Obviously I dont know, but with the state of their relationship NC must have been looking for new money for ages. Perhaps he found that but couldn't agree a deal with KL, perhaps he will return now with a more hostile takeover which is what I hope. Is it possible NC could not find new money so walked? If so and KL really wants out because she has had enough of her families time in the business of football it is not good....trying to stay positive but my head is full of black thoughts of the consequences and her popossible next steps to recoup their investment.

What a lot of people fail to realise is that NC was a dictator and a sad egotist.

He gave himself the title of chairman to massage his ego, but he never ran the club as a chairman. Dictators don't succeed if they don't own the thing they are dictator of. He never had a board of directors that he trusted to be better at their job than he could be himself. He hired people who would nod in agreement to every decision he made and ruled with a rod of fear. He ran the club as a highly paid General Manager.

The players took NC to heart after he removed Pardew and his antics. Listening to the media suggesting how highly the players rate NC is one thing, but why do the likes of LeTiss & Benali get banned from the venue when they are from the same ilk as the current team and a true part of the history of the club.

NC has pushed Saints as far as he can, but not as far as they can go. His ability of running a club has suddenly peaked out in a similar fashion to how he judged NA's managerial position.

Poch might go. If he does, he'd be a fool unless NC has a football club lined up already for them both to go to. If he doesn't go, then we all need to get behind him, support him, and forget about the "I go if NC goes" article and put it down to a translation issue.

All in all, I'm 100% happy NC has gone. Listening to the staff sing "ding dong the witch is dead" today, will give you some idea of how Southampton Football Club should NOT be run.

Hopefully, KL will bring in a structure of CEO and Directors that are able to drive the club forward to the next stage, in a similar fashion to the success of the other Liebherr companies.

Long live Liebherr.

What a load of rubbish!
ML Gave NC the job of running the club and the title of executive chairman. NC didn't give himself the title at all. Why have the club said that they are looking for areplacement executive chairman if NC made the title IP for himself?
NC was a determined chairman and wanted things done correctly, he therefore employed people to do the job, not just to nod to him.
The likes of le God and Bengali were banned? No Bengali was banned after he tried to sue the club. Le God, and no other players I know of, has never been banned, he was until this season a season ticket holder!
NC has pushed the club as far as he could go? Not bad then seeing as he took charge when we were in L1 and 4 years later we are comfortable in the top 10 of the prem, with many of the same players!
You heard the staff singing 'ding dongle the witch is dead'? Where? When? Give or show evidence. What we do know is that NC had total loyalty from the playing staff and management team, and probably SMS backroom staff, (I do know someone who works at SMS and she has always said the staff respect NC, I haven't been able to get hold of her today, I wonder why, but I will try to talk to her again in the near future to see if the song did happen).
Which other liebherr companies success do you want us to emulate?
As I've said before, no one minds if you don't like NC anchor one will try to get you to like him, or would have. You have an opinion and your entitled to it, however right or wrong it is. But don't come on here and use your dislike of NC to post the rubbish and lies you have. If you want to make statements about the club or NC then at least get your facts right, or show/prove your accusations.

The club aren't looking for a chairman ... they're looking for "Following his departure, Liebherr has become non-executive chairman, with a chief executive officer to be appointed in due course."

He never employed people with the spine to question any of his decisions. Even his Finance Director is currently working his notice period.

Benali took the club to the courts because the club owed him money on a commercial transaction. It was Benali's company that did that, not Benali personally, and zero reason to ban him from the stadia. You might want to look a little more in to Le Tiss not being allowed in the club. BTW, their bans both got lifted a couple of weeks ago, when the latter part of Cortese's notice period came into play.

I'm not going to give or show any evidence about the "witch is dead" being sung. The staff at the club have been run by fear since NC has been there.
There might be a n unfortunate chance he returns. The only staff at SFC that you will hear singing the praises of NC are the part timers, the stewards that don't realise the club operates more than 19-premier league days per season and a couple of cup games.

Any Liebherr model that is part of the multi-billion dollar empire is worth emulating.

Thank you for letting me have my opinion. It's really appreciated. Calling my statements "rubbish and lies" is a bit lame though. Go and find someone that is full -timer at St Mary's, and ask them what it's been like working under NC? When you've done that, let me know.

There was a rumour a little while back that the disagreement was to do with funds for transfers, NC requested and was refused, don't know who started the rumours or whether they are anywhere near true just something I heard. Just seems a little coincidental that this has happened during a transfer window when most other clubs are spending and strengthening their squads. Trouble is I think with a chairman that doesn't actually have full say in the complete running of the club, there is always going to be difficulties and especially with someone like NC who is by all accounts a leader and a decision maker. He was allowed the freedom to run is though persay, upto the point of finances, any funds required would need the authorisation of KL for release and this is the only reason I can see that there would be any disagreement. KL hasn't had any input in the day to day running and would only be silent partner that overlooked the business side and would be required to agree to release any funds?
Not an ideal situation and I am sad to see him go, he did exactly what he said and created a solid foundation from which is being grown a very decent football club from the back-end to the pitch. I hope MP stays but am not banking on it from whats been said previously, I am expecting an announcement from him, I hope he see's out the season before he decides to go.

Nah. To have control over who buys the club would be the ultimate position for him. He picks someone who shares his vision, is prepared to invest to achieve it and he remain as Executive Chairman - can't see him being unhappy with that.
There must be some truth in this.....He had a vision.....that's why he called the club his baby....But the real reason behind his resignation will be known some day.....

Hope there will not be a January 'fire sale' of our best players, prior to selling off the club, if that's the intention. Let's hope MoPo stays.

So yes, I can't think of anyone better to handle the sale than him.

your comment "Benali took the club to the courts because the club owed him money on a commercial transaction. It was Benali's company that did that, not Benali personally". you start by saying benali took the club to court because the club `owed` him money, then say that it was benalis company not him, which is it? by the way whichever it was its still benali who took the club to court, or are you claiming he has no say in his company? also he didn't take the club to court because they owed him money, it was because he thought they owed him money. settled out of court so we don't know the outcome. NC`s notice period, by all accounts, started 3 months ago not a couple of weeks.
did you not read the part where i said that i know someone who works at sms but have been unable to contact them yet? well i still haven't contacted her since yesterday, but she has always said that she loved working at sms and NC was a very charming man. she may not have got on the wrong side of him though and i can only go from what she says. there you go i have asked her (many times) what NC is like and that's the answer, you may not like it because it doesn't fit in with your negative views, but that is the truth of what ive been told.
the reason that your not going to show/give evidence of the singing you claimed happened is because it didn't! you thought it was a funny thing to post, that's ok but most wont think its that funny, but then most thought that NC did wonders for our club.
your right on one thing though. the club are not looking for a new chairman, but that's because they have already appointed one KL is the new chairwoman. they are looking for a chief executive officer to take over NC`s executive duties.
again are there any particular liebherr companies that you want us to emulate?

When you've done that, let me know.[/p][/quote]can you read? or did you read what I said and then chose to ignore it and again post lies half-truths and opinion as fact? I never `let` you have an opinion, I just stated that like everyone else you are entitled to think what you want. i cant `let` you have an opinion in the same way that i cant stop you having an opinion, and wouldn't want to. again Le God has never been banned from sms, stop trying to claim he has. el caballo santos101; The Le Tiss/Benali remarks are irrelevant to the point of what's happened and what's happening.

Trust me about the singing, it wasn't a choir, just a hum here and there amongst work colleagues. Staff had smiles on their faces and a glint in their eye going to work this morning.

I'm not sure how you think I'm being negative. This is the BEST thing to happen to SMS. Now the correct type of director level structure can be installed to drive the club forward with professionalism, pride and a few more positions up the table.
