Will Mauricio Pochettino quit St Mary's after Nicola Cortese exit from Southampton

SAINTS IN CRISIS: Now manager to reveal his future at the club

First published in News

Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino is today expected to reveal his future of the club.

It comes after the sudden exit of executive chairman Nicola Cortese from St Mary’s last night.

The Saints boss and his immediate coaching staff met with Cortese yesterday as the former executive chairman informed them of his dramatic resignation.

It is understood that Pochettino was prepared to back up his threat from the summer and quit too but was persuaded to stay on for Saturday’s game at Sunderland.

There are also fears that some of the club’s top stars like Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert may now quit the club during this transfer window.

Cortese quit the club last night and will now be replaced by Katharina Liebherr, daughter of the late Markus, as non-executive chairman.

A statement issued to the Daily Echo said: "Southampton FC today announces that club owner Katharina Liebherr has taken on the role of non-executive Chairman.

"This follows the resignation of Nicola Cortese.

"A search has begun for a Chief Executive Officer who will take over Mr Cortese's executive duties.

Katharina Liebherr (below) said: "With great regret we have accepted the resignation of Mr Cortese. He has done a wonderful job at the club and we very much wanted him to stay.

"A search has now begun for a successor. In the meantime, it is business as usual and we will ensure that the manager, the team and all the staff at the club have all the help and support they need."

Pochettino has had a night to clear his head before facing the press at his scheduled weekly briefing this afternoon.

Daily Echo:

He is sure to be grilled about Cortese’s departure and is likely to be asked to clarify his own future after saying in the summer he would quit if his former boss was no longer at the club.

With no executive replacement for Cortese currently in situ, there is something of a power vacuum at the club.

I have to agree, and think the Saints in Crisis headline is perhaps overly melodramatic

The Mirror are reporting all major players are up for sale - classic red top rubbish. If Katharina wants to sell the club then she will get the best returns selling it intact, not selling the best players and then selling what's left. Buyers want quick results, and you won't get that with a team where you're starting again

At the moment, I am reading that the club is being valued at around £100m.

By selling Shaw, Lambert, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Lovren and Wanyama, just for starters, she'd be looking at making close on £100m, so selling the club on top, would mean she would be quids in.

If there ARE any serious thoughts towards selling the club, then yes the sale price would be affected by the loss of the star players, but so long as the club maintains it's Premier League status (not guaranteed if we lose the above group of players) the selling price will still be massive.

As others have been saying/hoping, what is the possibility of NC coming back with a new backer?

He has proved, in the past, that he can make the right decision, on a regular basis, and that he plans for the long term. If as is being said, he was only at the club because he was working his notice, it can't be beyond the realms of possibility that he has prepared for this, and does have a backer in place.

I hope he does.

Let's face it for the owner of a EPL club these day's it is all about investment and the financial rewards at the end of it. With the Liebherr's we all knew it was when not if.

There are loads of EPL Clubs Newcastle, Aston Villa, Norwich, West Ham etc. that are going to have to face what Southampton are facing now. It's buy and sell culture that isn't going to change. Southampton FC won't be the only club looking for a new owner this season or next.

Katharina Liebherr is the present owner and if she sells I am pretty sure as a business woman worth £7 billion she will have a buyer in place without Cortese even knowing about it. Us fans will have to get use to short term owners making a profit on our Clubs.

The only really prized player that we have is the Mighty Lallana who could go for 15 million. Most of the academy player are worth around 2 up to 5 million. It pain me to say that but even Luke Shaw is not worth 10 million he hasn't prove anything yet and believe me no team would pay over the odd for an 18 years old full back he's not Dani Alves or David Alaba but he will be a star soon no doubt. We will lose a lot of money if Saint decide to sale Osvaldo and Ramirez knowing that we pay over 10 million for these donkeys. I do hope she knows what she's doing for the sake of the Fans.

It all seems unnecessarily dramatic. Liebherr doesn't want the operational burden; Cortese wants as much control as he can. Liebherr wants to take profit from a quick sale; Cortese feels that a longer tenure in the EPL increases the Club's value – against which any tension over his 'share' is not a real concern as it's tied to growth. Lose him, with an ensuing cascade of uncertainly, and both ambitions are probably torpedoed in one go. If that was the only gap to bridge you'd think that the Club's board and associates would have access to a calm, experienced mediator to bring them closer.

MoPo joined saints because Cortese sold him the vision of what he was trying to achieve. MoPo and the players bought into that and committed to the club as a result. With the loss of Cortese they may well feel the owners didn't buy into the vision and therefore it no longer holds the same appeal for them.

Yes,she has her Dad's eyes.
You're right - she does!

She's a woman who runs a successful multinational company and I think the problem with Cortese is that she, not unreasonably, wanted someone on the board to oversee exactly where her family's money is being spent and he didn't. I would expect her to be more than competent is choosing a successor, even if it means we'll be reigning in our spending a little.

Yeah I saw that the team is valued 100 million I almost choked while drinking my tea in the office. The team is not worth that much I would say 55 million 60 million £.
@therealredarmy

I think you have grossly underestimated the value of our players, in the current climate.
All of them, with the exception of Jack Cork, (unless that has changed) are tied to long contracts, which means the buying club will have to stump up serious money for them.
Lallana, £15m plus
Shaw, £15m plus
Wanyama, £15m plus
Lovren, £20m plus
Schneiderlin, £15m plus
Lambert, £5m plus (simply because of his age)
Osvaldo, £12-15
Ramirez, £10-12

And that's just for starters. Chambers is already proving that he could become as valuable an asset as Shaw, and then there is Ward Prowse.

That is well over £100m.

Add in the value of the stadium, the state of the art Grade 1 training facilities and does the club still own a patch of land somewhere, that has always been considered worth having?

The true value, should be considerably more than the figure being bandied about.

Someone, somewhere, stated that Fulham were recently sold for £150m, and their squad, man for man, is nowhere near as good as ours.
Plus I've seen their academy training ground. It's a park in New Malden that looks no better than a local park being used by Sunday League teams, which I don't know that they own.

Yes but if he joined based on certain promises in terms of investing in the team etc and those aren't honoured you could argue that the goal posts have been moved. We all know people that have accepted job offers based on promises that when they don't materialise they move on.

I'm expecting him to commit this afternoon but not so confident of seeing him start next season.

Like I said Lallana is worth around 10 up to 15 million but Shaw he's not worth 15 million no way good talent but not at this time 6 or 7 million. I agree with you Wanyama is worth around 11 up to 12 million 15 + add on base on appearance,Schneider
lin no way is worth 15 million he's not even an international well he could if he decide to switch and play for England 5 or 6 million, Lovren I would say 12 million, Osvaldo and Ramirez are not cut for the EPL so its a loss and you can't deny it mate !. Lambert Is worth 5 or 6 and I agree with you on this one. Yes we have great facilities and a good academy probably the best in the UK and a good stadium. The Squad might be worth around 55 up to 65 million, The stadium and the academy I don't their worth I'm not a realtor my friend but all I can say we have to be realistic here ! We've been through hard time and suffer and I really hope she know what she's doing mate !

Only two things can save the Saints the players pull their finger out and get in a European spot again you did get third to spot or win the FA cup to get in Europe Liebherr may not sell ?
Best option put your hands in your pockets and contact the wealthy Saints fans and see if you get a consortium to buy YOUR club.
Sadly after Rupert Lowe you didn't attempt to form a TRUST and will have to dig deeper now good luck ! its a uncertain future .
