Record Saints signing Dani Osvaldo has been suspended by the club for two weeks, following an alleged headbutt on a team mate.

The club confirmed the news  this morning.

It comes after the striker is believed to have been involved in an incident with Portugese central defender Jose Fonte.

The club has not taken any action against the defender.

According to one other report, there was said to be "blood everywhere" following the incident, with Fonte left with facial injuries.

In a statement, they said: "Southampton Football Club has today suspended striker Dani Osvaldo for two weeks, following an incident at the club’s Staplewood training ground.

"The club has taken swift and proper action for what it considers a breach of the conduct expected of its players.

"Southampton will be making no further comment on this matter."

The striker joined Saints from Italian club Roma in August, for a fee that could rise to as much as £14.6m and in September he announced that he and his girlfriend Jimena were expecting a baby.

The suspension comes as the striker was expected to make his comeback for Saints in the FA Cup against Yeovil Town on Saturday.

A combination of injury, illness, and then a three game ban for violent conduct has meant the Italian has been sidelined since mid-December, his last outing being that fateful game against Newcastle that led to the suspension.

The 28-year-old had a tricky time adapting to the Premier League in the immediate aftermath of his move from Roma in the summer but was just beginning to pick up some form before his extended absence.

He scored in back-to-back home games for Saints against Aston Villa and Man City before the Newcastle debacle.

Osvaldo was forced off injured at half time of the game at St James Park but later landed himself in trouble after a flare up between the respective benches.

At that stage Saints were obviously unaware that illness would follow his recovery from injury and appealed the FA’s violent conduct charge.

As it turned out, if they were to have accepted it Osvaldo would have served his ban during his recovery from injury and illness and would have been available since the turn of the year.

However, fate conspired against them and in fact he picked up the ban just as he was physically ready to return to the first team squad.
