A HAMPSHIRE MP has welcomed new Government plans to support mental health sufferers.

Eastleigh MP Mike Thornton, left, said he was pleased that an issue he had raised in Government was being addressed in the action plan called Closing the Gap: Priorities for Essential Change in Mental Health.

Closing the Gap was launched by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Liberal Democrat Care Minister Norman Lamb.

It sets out the Government’s 25 key priorities for improving mental health care and support, which includes establishing clear waiting times for services.

Mr Thornton said since his election he had campaigned about these waiting times and had introduced his own parliamentary bill – the Access to Mental Health Services Bill 2013- 2014 to pressure the Government.

He said that many people urgently needing treatment are having to wait too long.

He also welcomed steps to support schools in identifying such issues earlier by allowing teachers and mental health professionals to work together.

He added: “I am delighted that the Lib Dems are taking action to put right this profound injustice.”
