IT is normally a sign that spring is in the air.

But the first lambs of the year have been delivered in Hampshire in the depths of winter.

Sparsholt College near Winchester heaved open its farm gates to invite the public in to see the annual lambing.

It is one of the highlights of the year for the land-based college with hundreds of people visiting to see the flock of 250 ewes giving birth to a predicted 50 single lambs, 142 twins and 30 sets of triplets.

The operation was overseen by college shepherd John Garrett helped by dozens of college students who will go out on work experience at farms across the area to help deliver their lambs.
