A WORLD record attempt for ‘brides’ will go ahead – only with a last minute change of venue.

The Brides in the Aisles event, aimed at bringing together the largest ever gathering of people in a wedding dress, was meant to take place tomorrow at the Sainsbury’s superstore in Hedge End.

But when these plans fell through with just a week to go, the Haskins Garden Centre in West End has stepped into the breach.

Now organisers are anxious to let the public know of the change of venue.

Countess Mountbatten House hospice in West End organised the stunt to raise funds to meet its running costs and hope more than 750 people will take part.

The event, which will close Haskins, another one of the charity’s corporate partners, from 4.30pm, will now also involve a red carpet and interviews of the ‘brides’ as well as music with a DJ.

Pam Bates, from the charity, said that it became apparent that the store would be unsuitable because, although some participants have pre-registered, it was impossible to know how many people might turn up on the day.

She said she understands with the store closed it would need to know how many people were going to be in store for health and safety reasons.

Though Sainsbury’s are still contributing, with dresses made by students from Wildern School in Hedge End out of plastic bags they donated.

They will also have staff outside the store on the day as well as posters directing people to Haskins in case they are unaware of the change of venue.

The charity wants as many people as possible to come along in their bridal outfits and accessories and is expecting participants from as far as Basingstoke and Bournemouth.

Dani Ruiz-Perez, deputy store manager at Sainsbury’s Hedge End, said: “Hosting hundreds of people in store for this record would’ve presented a number of practical issues, particularly in relation to safety and disruption for our customers and colleagues.

“We are, however, in the process of planning our next fundraising events for Countess Mountbatten House hospice and hope to raise more funds for this important charity.”

You can register for the event today online and pay £5 by logging on to cmhcharity. org.uk or tomorrow at the garden centre.
