DRIVERS using one of the busiest routes into Southampton were hit by traffic chaos today when a gas main on the Redbridge Causeway sprung a leak.

Huge tailbacks built up along the A35 during rush hour as engineers were called to deal with a gas leak on the Redbridge Causeway.

The leak is in a medium pressure main running under the pavement next to the inbound side of the dual carriageway.

It was discovered by a member of the public who reported smelling gas.

Engineers working for Southern Gas Networks closed off one lane of the dual carriageway leading over the causeway while they battled to repair the leak.

Southern Gas Network told the Daily Echo they were confident that the repair would be completed quickly and emphasised that there was no danger to the public.

The gas leak follows a spate of similar leaks which took place on the trouble prone causeway which took place in November and October 2005.
