An investigation is underway today after a man died when he was struck by a car crossing the road in Southampton.

Police today issued an appeal for witnesses to the fatal accident which happened on The Avenue last night.

The 70-year-old died after the crash involving an Audi A3 that was travelling north towards Chilworth.

The accident happened near the junction with Saxholm Way at about 4pm.

Emergency services took the pedestrian to Southampton General Hospital but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The man has not been named but is believed to be from Southampton, while the driver of the burgundy Audi, who was not injured, was a 23-year-old from the Bournemouth area.

Police closed the road for sometime while investigations into the accident were carried out causing major delays for drivers heading in and out of the city.
