AN ELDERLY woman has died after her car collided with a refuse lorry on a Hampshire road this morning.
The woman, believed to be in her seventies, who was driving a blue Vauxhall car, died at the scene on Yokesford Hill, near Romsey, just before 10am.
The collision, which happened between Bunny Lane and Jinny Lane, closed Yokesford Hill for more than five hours as officers investigated the incident.
No one else was injured in the crash.
Sergeant Glen Barham, MBE, said: “I'm very keen to hear from anyone who may have seen either one of these vehicles travelling beforehand, or who may have witnessed the collision.
“I'm aware that this road was part of a diversion route and that there was no suitable alternative for traffic to pass through due to flooding. I am very grateful for people's patience and understanding whilst we were on scene investigating this tragic incident.”
Road closures were put in place at the junctions of Bunny Lane/Jinny Lane/A3057, and Belbins/Cupernham Lane causing major delays for motorists as no other diversion routes were available due to flooding.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Sgt Glen Barham, MBE, at Totton Police Station on 101, quoting Operation ASHGILL.
