POLICE have launched an investigation after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on a Hampshire main road yesterday.

The 50-year-old woman’s Yamaha bike was in collision with a grey Vauxhall Insignia.

The crash happened junction Moorhill Road and Southern Road in West End - an accident blackspot where residents are demanding action.

Paramedics took her to Southampton General Hospital but she suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Police are yet to formally identify her but said last night she was from Southampton.

The Vauxuall driver, a 33- year-old man from Fareham, was uninjured in the collision and was released after being questioned by police.

Shocked neighbours warned that the junction is a notorious accident black-spot and is getting more dangerous.

Elaine Smith, 61, from Southern Road, said: “There was this huge bang that sounded like an airbag going off.

“I saw the car on the corner and a woman walking by with her hands to her face in shock before ambulances and police cars arrived.

“It’s so awful the motorcyclist has died – it just isn’t right.

“It’s a lethal, dangerous corner and it’s always so busy at rush hour.

Neighbour Charles Stuart, 63, who offered cups of tea to bystanders and emergency services, said: “There were blue lights everywhere and they were putting the woman in an ambulance.

“It was apparent she was in a bad way.

“This road is quite a problem and it’s a constant source of anxiety for me.”

A 73-year-old neighbour who did not want to be named said: “It’s tragic – but it isn’t the first time something like this has happened round here.

“They need to do something about the road.”

Police sealed off Moorhill Road between Telegraph Road and West End Road for nearly seven hours as crash investigators studied the wrecked bike lying on its side and scoured the carriageway for clues.

Motorists faced severe delays as traffic built up in the surrounding roads in the West End and Bitterne areas before it reopened at 3.15pm.

Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone who was in the area at the time to contact Sergeant Rob Heard at the Eastleigh Roads Death Investigation team on 101.
