A HAMPSHIRE road could close less than 24 hours after it was reopened following severe flooding.

Police are consisering closing Budds Lane in Romsey and will make a decision today.

The road contains an industrial estate and businesses are frustrated at the current state of confusion.

But Greatbridge Road, a major route through the Georgian town, remains open with temporary traffic signals in place.

Although water levels are much lower than last week when the site was evacuated, they have risen overnight.

A police spokesman said: "There is a possibility of water levels rising further so as a precaution we may close the road at 12 noon.

"It's not definite and if any road were to close it would be Budds Lane, but we have to consider safety."

Flood defences have been built in nearby Fishlake Stream but more rain appears to have caused a problem.

Traders also said vehicles driving too fast through groundwater in Budds Lane and Greatbridge Road were increasing problems.

Stephen Cawte, owner of P&B Autocentre, said: "Yesterday the levels were much lower than this and you could walk normally in the road. I thought we would be back in business but we are back to square one.

"This has been going on for two weeks and I'm disillusioned now. Although my business has other sites I have staff to keep employed here.

"But because vehicles are driving so fast down here all the water comes down with them."

He added businesses were very pleased with the military intervention in the town to reduce the flooding."
