A SCHEME to build a specialist care home on the outskirts of a Hampshire market town has been given the green light.

Test Valley councillors approved Hartford Care’s proposed Abbotswood site in Romsey and the company hope to have the 60-bed, state-of-the-art home up and running in August next year.

Hampshire-based Hartford has invested £8million in the project which includes nursing care and the home will cater for people needing respite, day care and those suffering with dementia.

Around 80 jobs will be created by the development which will go on the 800-home Abbotswood village, just north of Woodley.

The company has a £30m scheme to open a total of four care homes across Hampshire.

This includes the Abbotswood care home along with homes under way at Fair Oak and Netley Abbey.

Hartwood House at Lyndhurst was opened by Hartford last year and the company hope to have the remaining three running by the end of next year creating about 300 jobs all together.
