In December 2013 I wrote concern of the latest vehicle squashing under the Whitehouse Bridge and said I despaired of the council’s spokesman: he did not know what to do to remedy the situation.

I repeated what I said before: dangle some heavy metal tubes at the same height as the bridge a few yards away – the banging would wake up the driver. The council ignored my suggestion.

A reader, John Stooke, sent a witty letter. He asked me not to despair – the council already had an LED sign that lit up at the side of the road if a vehicle was too high. It had not occurred to the council that a driver would not see a sign by the side of the road, nor would he know the height of his vehicle.

If my solution does not appeal to the council, why not try to find out what other authorities have done in a similar situation? I understand at least one bridge near London measures all vehicles electronically and all traffic is stopped by red lights. It works well.
