IT was the moment Southampton cheerleaders took over Guildhall Square.

As part of their degree, Southampton Solent University students held a public event to celebrate the city’s culture – including a flashmob.

International Creative Heartbeat was a one-off event with food, a raffle, music and the Southampton Ravens Cheerleading Squad leading a spontaneous dance in the shape of a heart to get passers-by involved.

All the money raised will be donated to Southampton charity the Rose Road Association.

Events management student Daniella Ribeiro said: “We wanted to do something a bit different and open our event to the public.

Everyone assumes that because we’re students we just want to go clubbing but this is something nobody has ever done before.

“It was celebrating how diverse Southampton is and we wanted to bring cultures together as well as raise money for charity. The flashmob was something fun for everyone to join in with if they wanted or entertainment if they just wanted to watch.”

y I feel it is this kind of sweeping statement sums up the elitist attitude toward University. To be quite frankly honest everyone and their mothers are getting degrees nowadays. We all work for three or four years, put on that cap and gown, and collect that piece of paper. So why does it matter where the degree came from? I happen to be a student at Solent University and proud to be. It is as good a University as any. So next time maybe keep your snide comments to yourself. Thanks.

I have no problem with people having fun but to emulate posing Americans as part of a degree devalues the qualification.
Contrast that with the fact that, in any week, there are several reports of major breakthroughs or prestigious awards granted to Southampton University.

"emulate posing Americans as part of a degree devalues the qualification."

I don't think these girls "pose" as Americans as part of their degree. They obviously are a part of the University Cheerleading Team which has recently become a huge athleticism all over the world including the UK.

You are obviously just petty and under educated with nothing better to do.

"emulate posing Americans" = imitate Americans who are posers.
"...recently become a huge athleticism" = an indication of who is deficient of education.

To be perfectly honest, now I have no idea what you are saying.
Maybe I'm too stupid?

But how much of a sad life do you have to just sit there and write negativity on articles that have no relation or interest of yours?

I think you should go out enjoy some of this sunshine and do more with your life.
