Mayors past and present attended the civic funeral of Honorary Alderman and past mayor Mrs Ivy White which took place at St Mary’s Church in Southampton yesterday.
Mrs White’s son, Mayor of Southampton Cllr Ivan White, led the tributes to his mother, who was Mayor of Southampton in 1987.
Mrs White died at the age of 97 on March 3 at Southampton General Hospital.
Cllr White told the congregation, which included the leaders of the three main political parties in the city as well as several past mayors and leading councillors, that his mother had remained active right up until the end of her life. Her interests had been so varied, said Cllr White, that not even he, who was close to his mother, was aware of all of them.
After the civic ceremony at St Mary’s Church, there followed a private family cremation service and a wake held at Bitterne Conservative Club.
A retiring collection was held to support the Mayor’s Charity.
