RAISING money for charity has been quite a scream for one Southampton school – after completing a Sport Relief Mile on a rollercoaster.
Geography teacher Jim Harrowven and 12 brave students from The Gregg School sped around Paulton’s Park’s The Cobra rollercoaster four times to encourage more people to sign up for Sport Relief Mile events.
The school were invited to take part in the challenge because they were one of the south’s top Sport Relief fundraisers in 2012, bringing in more than £1,500.
And this year they have even more planned with children going head to head with each other in a cross country competition, soaking their teachers with wet sponges, hosting a cake sale and dressing up as their favourite sporting personalities in a fancy dress competition.
Year 9 pupil Charlotte Furlow, 13, was one of the youngsters who took part in the challenge.
She said: “It was lots of fun.
Usually rollercoaster rides are too short so it was great that this one kept going.”
Assistant head teacher Cathy Goodchild said: “The school is passionate about raising money for Sport Relief and the whole afternoon on March 21 is about making as much as we can.
“It’s a fantastic cause that helps people in the UK and across the world that live incredibly tough lives and we’re thrilled to get behind it in 2014.”
There’s still time to sign up for one of the hundreds of Sport Relief Mile events which are taking place across Hampshire between March 21 and 23.
The money raised will help some of the neediest people in the UK and abroad.
