A SEVEN-DAY-OLD baby died in a Southampton hospital from a viral infection that caused her organs to fail, an inquest heard.

Isabelle Jelley battled disseminated neonatal herpes simplex virus type 2 infection for a week after she was born on May 7, before it spread throughout her body, resulting in multi organ failure.

Southampton Coroner’s Court heard how she died at the Princess Anne Hospital on May 14.

Pathologist Darren Fowler told the inquest that the baby didn’t present with skin lesions that normally occur with the virus, which he said is very difficult to treat and often results in the death of the baby.

Coroner Keith Wiseman recorded a verdict of death from natural causes.
