SOUTHAMPTON breast cancer surgeons have been given a digital boost thanks to donation left in a will.
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust has been able to upgrade operating theatre equipment so that surgeons can view digital mammography to guide them during surgery.
The hospital trust, which runs Southampton General Hospital, was able to buy two high definition monitors, costing £10,000, thanks to a legacy gift donation to Southampton Hospital Charity.
Consultant surgeon Ramsey Cutress said: “Digital mammography is recommended for young women and those with a family history of breast cancer. Breast cancer detected by screening may be seen on mammograms but might be too small to feel as a lump.
“These new monitors mean that during breast cancer surgery we can view the same images in the operating theatre as are used by the team for the diagnosis of breast cancer.”
