HIGHWAYS chiefs have identified the chosen route for a proposed £30m bypass around Stubbington.

Plans for a bypass around the village of Stubbington have been talked about for decades.

Residents have called for the scheme to help cut congestion and improve access to Fareham and Gosport.

Now, following initial consultation last year, Hampshire County Council has picked its preferred route for the bypass.

They have chosen a 50mph route between Gosport Road and Titchfield Road, with the alternative between the Titchfield Road and Newgate Lane likely to be restricted to 40mph.

The council will present the proposals to the public in June for further consultation, and a planning application could be handed in next spring.

Discussions about funding the scheme are still ongoing between the council, the Government and developers.

County councillor for Stubbington Christopher Wood said: “It’s exactly the route that I’ve asked for all along and it’s the route that most residents have asked for.

“This scheme is absolutely vital to our area, as the traffic coming through Stubbington is already absurd and has only been exacerbated by the works at Daedalus.

“It’s been talked about for 40 years and it’s only now that we’re going to get something done about it.”

It is part of a £90m project to imp-rove access to Fareham and Gosport.

Other proposals due to be looked at by the council’s transport chief Cllr Seán Woodward today include replacing the southern part of Newgate Lane between the junction with Tanners Lane and the Peel Common roundabout with a new carriageway.

The Peel Common roundabout could also see traffic lights installed at its junctions with Newgate Lane, Rowner Road and Broom Way.

Parts of central Fareham’s road system will be improved, with Gudge Heath Lane getting extra capacity and a new bus lane into town.

And the layout of the Titchfield gyratory could be modified to allow better access from Titchfield Road onto the A27 westbound.
