PLANS for the final pieces in the jigsaw of Southampton’s former Ordnance Survey site go before council planners next week.

The city council’s planning panel will meet on Tuesday March 25 to discuss developer Kier’s plans for a Tesco Express and dozens of new homes on the site in Romsey Road, Maybush.

The William Roy Building in Romsey Road, which was once home to OS’s 5,000 staff, was knocked down in 2012.

OS moved to its new £40million headquarters at Adanac Park, Nursling, and the old site was bought by construction giant Kier for a huge new housing development.

When work is completed at the 24-acre site by the end of next year, it will house almost 400 new homes.

Barratt Homes is already building 141 homes at the southern side of the site, while Taylor Wimpey is putting up 179 homes in its northern section.

Almost 200 construction jobs have been created through the project, and now Kier will find out if its planning application for the final section of the site will be successful.

The firm’s application is for 43 houses, 23 flats, a 4,113 sq ft convenience store, a 1,000sq ft retail or cafe unit and a new public park.

Tesco has already confirmed to the Daily Echo that it was in discussions with Kier over taking on the large store unit if the planning application was successful.

The new Tesco Express store could create 30 jobs.

Planning officers have recommended that councillors support the latest plan.
