Southampton is taking on Europe for a £4m cash prize

Daily Echo: The Mayor's Challenge competition was launched by Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, pictured The Mayor's Challenge competition was launched by Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, pictured

ROME, Barcelona, Vienna, Berlin and... Southampton.

They are five of the 155 European cities battling it out to win a £4million jackpot.

The Daily Echo can reveal that civic chiefs have launched a bid to win the Mayor’s Challenge, which will see them compete against cities from across the continent for the cash prize.

And if Southampton does win the prize, residents, community leaders and business figures from across the city will have a say on what it is spent on, as part of the commemoration of the 50 years of its city status.

Launched by Mike Bloomberg, the billionaire former Mayor of New York, the competition is designed to fund innovative ideas to improve cities.

Across the continent, 155 cities from 28 countries have applied to win the €5million (or about £4.1million) first prize, or one of four runner-up prizes of €1million.

More than 300 cities took part in the first competition, which took place in the USA in 2012-13.

The winner was Providence Talks in Rhode Island, which has used its cash prize to launch a new programme to improve literacy in deprived neighbourhoods.

If Southampton wins, council bosses say people from across the city would be able to choose what the jackpot is spent on, through the 50 pledges being made to mark the 50th anniversary of city status.

They say it would have a “lasting impact” on the city by allowing the communities themselves to decide what the best improvements could be.

A spokesman said: “This is a really exciting opportunity and naturally we would be delighted to obtain funding through the Mayor’s Challenge.

“If we were successful this would be used to fund activities identified by individuals and communities as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for the city, and would make important improvement to community engagement, aspirations and a shared vision for Southampton.”

But to win the jackpot Southampton is up against cities from every region of Europe – from Berlin, Rome and Brussels to the Albanian capital Tirana and the Lithuanian city of Kaunas.

And Bournemouth, Bristol, London and Manchester are among the 29 UK cities taking part.

Twenty cities will be picked to contest the final round in the next few months, with those finalists being invited to Brussels to a two-day event where they will work with experts to fine-tune their proposals.

They will then hand in revised applications in the summer, and the winners will be announced in the autumn.

it costs the uk £50 million a day to be in the eu so if we came out you could give £4 million to 12 uk cities every day of the year

The headline just made me laugh.

Southampton has no chance! I'd love to be positive but no Councillor actually cares about the City!

No Matter wether it's Labour or Cons, they are so busy trying to discredit one another they forget they are supposed to running a City.

Not even sure why I am voicing an opinion, no-one will listen and the City will continue to go down the pan.

Some good posts here. If Southampton was to win, it could be spent in a whole wide variety of ways such as:

The Spitfire Memorial
Promenade the Town Quay and give us some proper peaceful Waterfront access
Go towards building the South's biggest indoor arena

If Southampton was to win, what would it realistically be spent on?

Giving Councillors pay rises and enjoying watching everyone else suffer
Building even more 'landmark' shopping centres
Building even more 'landmark' flats
Paying for more roadworks that never actually get done

Anyway, Southampton will never win this in a million years

You really do talk some utter rubbish sometimes. It's very easy, and lazy, to knock the city councillors. But the vast majority of them - of all parties - are hardworking individuals who care about the city and the community and put an awful lot of their own time into trying to improve it, a very difficult task given the size of the cut in central government grant which has hit Southampton 5 times harder than Winchester. Why are there cranes all over the city? Because it's being invested in and all kinds of buildings are going up, which is not a sign of a city that's in decline. Things are looking up. Why don't you try to see the good in things instead of the bad?

You've answered your own question. "when there's a shortage of housing"
Have you seen the amount of family sized homes knocked down to make way for some developer to make a fortune out of a block of flats?
Go up Laundry Road & you'll see flats that many of the residents don't give a **** about compared to what was there & the people who cared for the place they lived in.
It was bungalows.
If we built more houses on brownfield site & then one bedroomed flats I could understand it but we have people telling us there's not enough one,two bedroomed flats/houses for people to downsize to?
how many of these blocks of flats are one roomed & council?

"when there's a shortage of housing" Have you seen the amount of family sized homes knocked down to make way for some developer to make a fortune out of a block of flats? Go up Laundry Road & you'll see flats that many of the residents don't give a **** about compared to what was there & the people who cared for the place they lived in. It was bungalows. If we built more houses on brownfield site & then one bedroomed flats I could understand it but we have people telling us there's not enough one,two bedroomed flats/houses for people to downsize to? how many of these blocks of flats are one roomed & council? loosehead

I was made redundant when my factory shut through an EU edict I was a year from getting my company pension.
My wife wanted to move back to Thailand so I gave it a go but once there my wife said why did we sell the bungalow?
Which kinda shocked me but after 6months I couldn't hack mosquito bites & I wasn't going to start smoking(deters them) & we had power cuts & my friend was killed driving home one night by a Thai driver driving the wrong side of the road with his lights off?
Thais believe no lights no use of the battery saving you money?wrong side of road to save petrol so I came back.
If I'd known then my wife would have been happy to live up North we would be there now but I took out a 6x my pension mortgage & if interest rates go up I'm in trouble so instead of waiting & crying it was the governments fault I'm doing something about it.
Up North I can get a three bedroomed house for £69,000 so why if say you can swap & get a postmans job up there wouldn't you move to get a better quality of life?
I wish you & others all the best but in the next three months I'm gone (but I love my city,Southampton) As I can no longer afford to buy here.

thank you! I was a BAT worker & a EU edict about the level of tar & Blairs refusal to fight to allow us to export shut us down.
Germany carried on against EU law & Poland got EU money to build a brand new factory producing for export.
People here cheered & said about High tech jobs going to the site & what have we got? COSTCO's a low paid/medium paid employer not a well paid employer like BAT.

Up North I can get a three bedroomed house for £69,000 so why if say you can swap & get a postmans job up there wouldn't you move to get a better quality of life? I wish you & others all the best but in the next three months I'm gone (but I love my city,Southampton) As I can no longer afford to buy here.[/p]
Fair enough were you a Ford worker then? Sorry to hear about your friend being run over by the Thais. Best of luck to you up North, hope Northern life treats you well[/p]
thank you! I was a BAT worker & a EU edict about the level of tar & Blairs refusal to fight to allow us to export shut us down. Germany carried on against EU law & Poland got EU money to build a brand new factory producing for export. People here cheered & said about High tech jobs going to the site & what have we got? COSTCO's a low paid/medium paid employer not a well paid employer like BAT. loosehead
