1,300 jobs will be created by the Southampton Harbour Hotel

Daily Echo: £50m spa hotel project set to start in summer £50m spa hotel project set to start in summer

WORK is set to get underway this summer on a £50m luxury hotel in Southampton, bringing 1,300 jobs to the city.

The Daily Echo can reveal that work on the super-yacht inspired Southampton Harbour Hotel, which could become the city’s first five-star establishment for five years, will begin this July.

And the firm behind the plans says that 300 jobs will be created at the hotel while more than 1,000 other positions could be created as a result of the new complex.

The Nicolas James Group, which owns a string of hotels across the south coast, and MDL Marina saw their plans for the site at Ocean Village approved by the city council in 2012.

Their vision for the site is centred on a 76-flat hotel that will extend out into the marina and feature a spa and a rooftop restaurant and champagne bar with stunning views over Southampton Water. It will also feature 12 luxury duplex flats on top of the hotel.

Five-star status They will bid to get prestigious five-star status for the hotel, meaning it would be the first city hotel to have the top ranking since the then-called De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel was downgraded to four stars in 2009.

One of Hampshire’s top chefs, Alex Aitken, is already in line to take the helm at the new restaurant.

The site will also boast an apartment building boasting 82 flats in three towers up to ten storeys in height, and 1,139sq metres of commercial floor space which could be used for new restaurants and shops, as well as a basement car park.

Nicolas James Group says work on the site will begin in July, with the hotel due for completion within 18 months and the flats within the next two years.

The firm says that the two-year delay between planning permission being granted in 2012 and work starting this year is down to improving the layout of the buildings.

The hotel itself will directly employ 300 people, but the company says more than 1,000 jobs will be indirectly created as a result.

They include roles such as landscaping, entertainment, wedding suppliers, window cleaners and suppliers.

And with hundreds more jobs being created during construction, it is possible the complex could lead to more than 1,500 new jobs overall.

Group chairman Nicolas Roach said: “South-ampton lacks a five-star hotel product.

“We intend to bring a luxury waterfront hotel and spa to the city along with roof top restaurant concept.”

Civic chiefs and business leaders in the city have welcomed the start of work and the jobs boost to the city.

City council leader Simon Letts said: “This is really good news as we need a high end offer to attract the big spenders to Southampton, and many of the new jobs will be high quality posts at the hotel and other elements of the development.”

And Stewart Dunn, chief executive of the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “This is welcome news not only because of the creation of hundreds of jobs, which is vital in boosting the economy, but also because it will give the city the first five-star hotel we have had for some time to cater for the increasing cruise passengers and visitors to the city.”

Its all about the flats not the hotel. De'vere could'nt make 5 star work, hotels and casino's? How about some substance?

You have to admire the council, filling the bottom end of the city with housing but little parking and then introduce out of hours parking charges.

I am all for jobs, but we need real jobs not the cheap paid slave labour jobs that are being supplied , the best paid jobs will be in the construction of the Hotel and homes the 1,000 jobs that will be only short term contract, the 300 jobs that will be created after the construction as finished will be over work and poorly paid.
The jobs that are needed are jobs that build machinery, if the city carries on going in this direction we will end up with a rich center and poverty all around

Southy LOW paid jobs is the correct way of saying it as Slave Labour is wrong.
My sister works at the Grand Harbour & works every hour she can & she's buying her home but she's not a slave.
So if people are willing to put in the hours this could be a good job & let's get it right no complaints if Brits don't want the jobs yet EU people do.

Because they no longer represent the people of Southampton, they will represent rich people who do not live in Southampton and cater for all there needs.
So do you regret the fact that this will bring jobs to the city Southy? I can't see what there is to complain about with this.
Under stand what slave really means loose, you are a slave to the system weather you like it or not, and you sister is a slave just because a person gets paid do not mean that they are free from being a slave.

Why do we need a new bridge over the Itchen? The ones we have are quite adequate. And remember that road upgrades bring inevitable disruption. The city council etc. get pilloried whenever there's delays caused by the road improvement works that are going on at the moment. I don't necessarily mean you specifically, but there's loads on these forums who will moan like buggery as soon as the next road improvement scheme kicks off, despite the fact that it benefits the city in the long run.

One question: what rich idiot would actually pay 5 star prices to stay in the dump that was once Southampton? Look out your window for a view of hmmm, sheds where the Ocean Terminal Building used to be, the recycling and power station across at Marchwood, tatty buildings and a general air of decay about the place. That's if you are prepared to struggle through the traffic and endless sets of traffic lights in order to get there. Any rich person in their right mind would avoid Southampton like the plague and stay at one of those lovely hotels in the New Forest. I say this as a Southampton resident. Just don't bother.

Capitalism means you are a slave to the system and it will drive you into poverty make you a slave even if it means paying a small amount, Capitalism will want to control every thing and own every thing its greed as no limits and is why wars come about and to reduce the population free thinking people, in Capitalism no one is allowed to find there real potential not with out capitalism say so, you might think you have it well made for your self, but if will get you also in the end as more and more wealth is diverted to the very few at the top, your grand kids will have nothing and why because your thinking about your self only the short term.
Socialism do not drag any one down that is the act of Capitalism, for every single person that makes it in Capitalism thousands of others will be driven into poverty, With Socialism every one life will improve because it will bring every standards up and stop those at the very top of making to much profit out of others.
In Capitalism you work longer week longer into life for less pay, with Socialism its the other way round shorter working week, retire by choice earlier, and higher pay for the lower levels.
Its the workers that make the profit for any business but they get the smallest % while at the top they get the biggest%

Read the article. The council are not building anything - it's called private development. If you need to ask why the council aren't building things then you probably haven't kept up with the financial constraints ?
Southampton council granted the planning permission
What does that have to do with anything. The planning department grant permission for hundred of schemes a week. On what grounds could they have blocked it then?
Easy one would be, the location the land was reclaim for docks use, industrial use and they could of refused under these terms

So do you regret the fact that this will bring jobs to the city Southy? I can't see what there is to complain about with this.
Under stand what slave really means loose, you are a slave to the system weather you like it or not, and you sister is a slave just because a person gets paid do not mean that they are free from being a slave.
Your in a system that will deliberity will put you and every one in debt, so you get little or no choice
So a system where the elite few & the party members live in gated communities & want for nothing whilst the majority live on starvation levels isn't slavery then Southy?
Here I have a choice work extra hours & improve my live or live off the state either way I have a choice do the people in The Socialist Republic of North Korea?
Who's the slave's the people who have a choice or the ones with no choice?

If anyone is a slave it's you who is trapped in the tiny bubble of socialism that wants to drag everyone down to a base level instead of letting them find their true potential. I call the total lack of interest in your cause as the first witness.
I decided that I wanted to work hard, create something and be comfortable as a result of it. I did, I am and trust me when I tell you that you'll have to work for your crust because you won't sit on your backside and steal mine.

I can answer that one for you Southy. Britain paid for WW2 by spending all its reserves, ransacking its empire and borrowing still more from the Americans. Which led to drastic post-war austerity extending well into the 1950s, the rapid dismantling of the entire empire and relegation of Britain from superpower status on a permanent basis. We had no choice because we faced a mortal threat from Nazi Germany so in your words 'we done what was needed'. The number of parallels between then and now? Zero.

No its about understanding the beginnings how things came about and why and why they stop during war time, money can all ways be found for war and weapons but never for the people, the debt that we have now is cause though the capitalist they run the debt up but expects the less well off to pay for it, it was because of Socialist ideals is why the debt for WW! and the debt ran up in the 1920's and 30's and the WWII debts all got paid off.

So no the parallels are not that far apart, if it can be done in war time then it can be done at any time
I should have known better than to even try....
Southy, you spout utter toss on a monotonous and regular basis.
Things are not done for the majority to enjoy, its only done for the few.
Bobs Your Uncle summed it up nicely you should take note of him
Remind me what wisdom Bobs Your Uncle has dispensed which I've missed. Incidentally Southy, do you not realise that you are (at best) only semi-literate? Can you not grasp the fact that all your posts, on whatever subject, have a massive credibility gap because of this? I doubt 'weather' you do.

Why don't the council actually build something for the kids of Southampton like a ice rink or snow dome .....There is nothing here![/p]
Because they no longer represent the people of Southampton, they will represent rich people who do not live in Southampton and cater for all there needs.[/p]
So do you regret the fact that this will bring jobs to the city Southy? I can't see what there is to complain about with this.[/p]
The jobs that are needed are jobs that build machinery, if the city carries on going in this direction we will end up with a rich center and poverty all around[/p]
Southy LOW paid jobs is the correct way of saying it as Slave Labour is wrong. My sister works at the Grand Harbour & works every hour she can & she's buying her home but she's not a slave. So if people are willing to put in the hours this could be a good job & let's get it right no complaints if Brits don't want the jobs yet EU people do.[/p]
Under stand what slave really means loose, you are a slave to the system weather you like it or not, and you sister is a slave just because a person gets paid do not mean that they are free from being a slave. Your in a system that will deliberity will put you and every one in debt, so you get little or no choice[/p]
Bad spell of whether we are having Southy, but I think I catch your drift.[/p]
The system own us and the real free thinking people are trying to break it and that means Socialism a few here that supports Capitalism totally know this and don't want people to be able to think out side of the box that capitalism as created for all to live in, start thinking out side that they get very worried. I still waiting on a Q that was ask a long time ago to the Capitalist on this site. Q was " how come during a major war like WWII we can find all our finances that is needed and yet in peace time we getting all these cuts. The truth is during a major war, we done what was needed so why can't we do the same in peace time. Debt and Credit was created so it can own and control others.[/p]
Zero.[/p]
We knew during the wwii there would be no Empire even Churchill knew this (and is why in one of his war time speeches he says "if the Empire or Commonwealth should last 1000 years (2066 see the 1,000 years)) one of the condition set on us by the Americans for there help was the breaking up of Empires, this was for to pave the way for America rich elites to take control raping the earth of its wealth, American plans started way back in 1918 and in 1920 the first steps was being taken, it was a shock to the Americans that all but 2 of the Empire country;s joined the Commonwealth. I listened to Cllr Letts on the TV today & now I know just out of touch this Labour council is with reality.
The only problem with this structure is can the local road infrastructure take the extra traffic from the flats they're building?
Letts said there's not enough one bedroomed apartments in this city to allow tenants swap from bigger properties?
Try the flats from Freemantle pak up to Foyes Corner then from Foyes corner down to the Rovers Pub.
Many Housing association flats of the one bedroom size with young families in so why isn't the council arranging the swap?
Will the flats at Mayflower Park the social housing ones be only one bedroom for tenants to swap larger properties for?
I just feel with out better road structures in that part of town building blocks of flats for who ever is ludicrous.

You are quite correct, the current Road structure simply cannot cope. All it takes is one cruise liner to come in and the entire area becomes congested. Infact, you don't even need a cruiseliner during rush hour to see how congested it is already.
