Pub raises a glass after quarter of a century in Southampton

First published in News

THE owners of a popular Southampton nightclub are celebrating 25 years being in the heart of Bevois Valley.

Xcalibar Dungeon was brought by landlords Tony Court and Sue Rossiter in 1989, when it was known as the Crown and Sceptre.

The watering hole in Bevois Valley Road will hold a fancy dress party tonight to celebrate and Sue and Tony are calling on old regulars to come back and raise their glasses.

The couple only bought the Crown and Sceptre, which first opened in 1957, after they quit their previous jobs as postal workers.

Sue, 60, said: “When we walked into the place we saw there was someone drinking here and we thought this is the one for us.”

The pub has been well known for its rock music, and the ‘Dungeon’ part of its name was created after they converted the cellar into a nightclub.

It also had a popular comedy club night that saw well-known comedians like Harry Hill and Dave Thompson headlining.

Now it is trying to move away slightly from its origins as a hideaway for rock fans and a refurbishment in July last year saw upstairs converted into a pub.

The party will be held from 9pm to 2am, and is free to attend before 10pm, after that it will cost £3.

So bloody fed up of this place..Well not with the place but rather the students and such, scrraming and shouting up past denzil avenue..This is a residential area!
People are asleep or trying to sleep..I have been woken up many times at 4AM by this constant noise.
Especially on weds when they have a drink promotion on.
I know people like to have a drink and party.(myself included)
But the racket! make it stop please SUE!

None of the bar owners in town care what happens when their patrons leave, all they want is their money and for them to get out.

Considering it's been there for 25 years and people have since moved into a house locally, they still complain about the noise.

No one forced you to take up residence near a popular venue, get over yourselves and move away, maybe?

Excuse me..I have lived in and around the dungeon for the past 30 years..But with the drinks promotions going on in there the noise has got steadily louder over the years.
As i said before everyone has a right to party and let their hair down but it's ridiculous.
I also know the dungeon closes at 2AM and they are still 'getting rid' of people at 3AM..They hang around shouting and singing till 4AM..Don't lecture me on being forced to move here either..Move away??? i wish i could afford to!..THIS IS A RESIDENTIAL AREA..I will do it in my up-most power to have all the bars closed down in that area!. IF THE LANDLORDS AND LANDLADIES don't do something about it ..(I'M GLAD THEY CAN GO HOME AT NIGHT AND HAVE A PEACEFUL SLEEP)With exception to the rockstone...I may even go out and conduct street interviews with a video camera.
