DETECTIVES are hunting a mobility scooter driver who mowed down a 94-year-old pensioner in a hit and run incident.

The elderly victim was left with cuts and bruises after being knocked to the floor by the vehicle.

She was walking down an alleyway in central Romsey at 12.30pm when she was hit.

And although she was left with injuries that required treatment by paramedics, the driver of the vehicle did not stop to see how she was.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to track down the driver after the incident in the alleyway next to Boots in The Hundred on Saturday (March 29).

It is the second time in recent months that a mobility scooter has injured a pedestrian in Hampshire.

Susan Daniels was left with a fractured knee and a ruptured tendon in her left arm after an 88-year-old man crashed into her in Station Road, New Milton.

The 69-year-old now finds it difficult to get around due to her injuries, and she called for the law to be changed to stop people buying scooters without tax or insurance.

That came after the Daily Echo ran a campaign calling for people to be forced to undertake a driving test before being able to drive the vehicles.

We launched the campaign after 90-year-old Eileen Butt was left with severe head and facial injuries when she was hit by a scooter in Hamble.

People in Romsey agreed that something needs to be done.

Nick Michell, who manages the market near to where the 94-year-old was hit, said: “I think they need to be regulated better.

“We should look at the laws about scooters - whether they should be allowed on pavements, or whether there should be a speed limit when they are on the pavement.”

Bertie Lemint, a stallholder at the market, said: “That's sad, I hope the lady is well.

“I don't think they should be allowed on the pavement. Scooter drivers don't just ask you to get out of the way, they expect you too.”

And Andy Watkins, who works in the area, said: “I'm shocked, it's not very nice at all.

“A lot of people on scooters are a law unto themselves. It wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened.”

Speaking after the incident in Romsey, PC Peter Stansfield said: “This incident has left an elderly woman injured and very shaken. It has happened at a busy time of the day in Romsey town centre and I'm sure someone will have seen something relevant to our investigation. I'd urge them to contact us.”

Anyone with information should contact PC Stansfield at Romsey police station on 101.
