IT is an improving school that is on its way up.

A Totton school has been ranked ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors after years of being just ‘satisfactory’.

Teachers at Oakfield Primary School now hope to get top marks next time and achieve ‘outstanding’ results.

This comes after their latest SATS results for Year 5 and Year 6 students were well above the national average, with 80 per cent of 11-year-olds achieving top grades.

Inspectors who visited the school last month said the children were friendly, polite and interested in learning. They praised the school for encouraging achievement.

But to get top marks next time inspectors said work needs to be done to ensure that children are well behaved outside lessons and that work is set at the right level for children with different needs.

Elizabeth Smith, head teacher at the Sylvia Crescent School, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have achieved ‘good’ status.

“Our pupils are really hard-working, and whilst our staff put in a lot of hard effort, our children take as much credit as they have to be prepared to learn, and they are.

“This is a great leap from our last inspection. Inspectors have stated in conversation that some lessons observed were ‘outstanding’, and so we are continuing to aim high to become outstanding in the future.”

Andy Sutton, chairman of governors, said: “The head teacher and her team have worked incredibly hard since the last Ofsted inspection to encourage and inspire our children to make the remarkable progress which has led to such a great result.

“Our governors are extremely proud of both the staff and the children and would like to congratulate all. Onwards and upwards we go.”
