CONTROVERSIAL roadworks in a Hampshire community are set to restart on Monday – after weeks of delays caused by floods.

Southern Water’s mains replacement scheme in Main Road, Colden Common will recommence on April 7, and involve a temporary road closure between Church Lane and Scotts Close.

As reported, weeks of works to lay new mains earlier this year saw tensions escalate to such an extent that contractors reportedly called in the police after being verbally abused by angry members of the public.

Businesses at Fisher’s Pond, in Colden Common, reported a rapid decline in trade, with some claiming to have lost up to 30 per cent of their usual custom.

But the works were put on hold during the winter storms to alleviate possible congestion from nearby roads closed by flooding.

With work starting again the closure will result in a 1.4km local diversion directing traffic along Church Lane, Brambridge, and Highbridge Lane.

Temporary traffic lights will be put in at the junction of Main Road and Portsmouth Road, and will be manually controlled during peak times to minimise the disruption.

Project manager Peter Simmons said: “We need to return to put the finishing touches to the work, including cleansing the pipe.

“The route will be partially closed but it’s very much business as usual for nearby attractions and businesses.”

Contractor Clancy Docwra will be working seven days a week, and work is expected to be completed by April 21.
