POLICE have shut down a rave in a Hampshire city.

Officers in Winchester took action after being alerted to suspicious activity spotted in Headbourne Worthy.

They were called to an industrial estate off Well House Lane on Friday at around 7pm by a member of the public.

Around 15 people were gathered setting up equipment including generators, speakers, electric saw and sound system.

The equipment was seized and police said an 18-year-old man has been reported to court for summons.

As previously reported in the Daily Echo, last May police were called in to break up an illegal rave which involved more than 150 people.

It was organised through social networking sites and led to scores of people congregating in woods in Chandler's Ford known locally as Hut Wood, along Bournemouth Road.

Police received numerous complaints of loud music and activity and deployed uniformed patrols, dog handlers, the riot-trained Force Support Unit and the police helicopter to disperse the rave.

This was the second illegal rave to be shut down in the same month.

Two people needed hospital treatment suffering from the effects of alcohol after another event in the tranquil village of Sherfield English, near Romsey, which involved an estimated 300 people.

Police last year launched Operation Enigma - a force-wide crackdown on such events.
