“GIVE yourself up” – that’s the plea from a Southampton mum to her son,who is on the run from prison.

Police say Dean Evans, who was jailed for making threats to kill a woman and her children, should not be approached.

But last night his mum made an emotional plea for Evans to hand to hand himself in.

As revealed yesterday, he went missing on Easter Monday from Leyhill Open Prison near Bristol.

Officers at Avon and Somerset Constabulary believe he is hitchhiking or trying to catch a train back to Hampshire and are liaising with their colleagues in the county.

He is described as white, about 5ft 6in, of small build, with blue eyes and cropped brown hair.

Last night his mum made an emotional plea for the 36-year-old to hand himself in.

The woman from Southampton, who asked not to be named, claims her son is not violent and does not think he is heading back to the city.

She said: “He wouldn’t come here, for the main reason that he would not want to get me in trouble.

“If anything he would have called me if he was coming here.

“I want people to know he isn’t violent. I would like him to give himself up and give me a call – his family would like him to hand himself in so we know he’s safe.”

Evans was jailed in 2006 after pounding on the window of a woman who was watching television with her three children at night in their flat in Southampton.

He had been drinking since 8am and turned up at the flat semi-naked and wielding a pole.

After banging on the window he shouted at the terrified family inside: “This is my flat. I live here, open the door.

“I died in this flat. I have put lighter fluids around the flat.

I’m going to burn this place down and I will kill you.”

He then started smashing the double-glazed window before a neighbour, who alerted police, grabbed Evans.

Evans admitted making a threat to kill, common assault, causing damage and failing to surrender to bail, when he appeared at Southampton Crown Court.

He was returned to prison in 2011 after breaching the terms of his release, and had been serving his time at Leyhill.
