THE Royal Marines Corps of Drums have smashed the Guinness World Record for the longest group drum roll.
The record was broken by 40 Royal Marines buglers from the Royal Marines School of Music and bands from HMS Collingwood in Fareham, Portsmouth, Plymouth and Scotland who performed a drum roll lasting 64 hours.
The event, which was part of a year of celebrations to mark the 350th anniversary of the Royal Marines, was launched by Tom Hardy and Harrison Ford on Wednesday evening.
Each drummer then took turns playing for 15 minutes until Saturday morning.
The record was previously held by students of Big Rapids High School in the USA, who performed for 28 hours, 19 minutes and three seconds.
Corporal Bugler Stuart Warmington, whose idea it was, said: “To have broken the record is amazing.”
The event helped to raise money for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, which supports families.
