A SOUTHAMPTON park was awash with colour today as a major fundraiser was launched.

Hampshire hospice Naomi House is staging its first ever Rainbow Run later this year, a 3k race where runners are pelted with paint.

And to get into the spirit of things volunteers started throwing the special powdered paint early at a mock starting line in East Park, Southampton.

Even hospice deputy chief executive Mark Smith could not escape unscathed with his suit resembling a canvas when the dust settled.

Mr Smith said: "This is a huge event for us because it is in aid of the Caterpillar Appeal to refurbish Naomi House and we are sure it will be great fun for everyone."

It takes place in Southampton in September.

Having seen the damage that this powdered paint does to cameras, I wonder about its effect on the lungs.

So just how much is actually going to the intended charity? I know in other parts of the world its called a colour run and very little of the monies raised actually goes through to the nominated charity and the majority of the entrance fee is a tidy profit for the organisers

Naomi House & Jacksplace says...

Hi all. Perhaps we can answer a few questions for you. The paint is made from powdered potato starch. It is totally safe, although people with respiratory conditions should check with their GP before participating. We are all fit and well after yesterday's launch event (and so is our camera).

Although we launched the event yesterday, the main event will take place on Sunday 7th September. We hope you can make it.

The event is being organised by the team at Naomi House and Jacksplace. As such, you can be confident that the vast majority of money raised will go directly to support our valuable work. We are seeking sponsors to cover the cost of things like paint stations, and if you know of any businesses or organisations that would like to support the run, we would be delighted to hear from them. We hope the event will raise close to £30,000 towards our Caterpillar Appeal.
