A MAN assaulted a van driver after a road-rage style argument in Southampton.

The 63-year-old victim was driving along Bitterne Road West when his Fiat Doblo van wing mirror appeared to clip a pedestrian.

The motorist stopped to check if the man attempting to cross the road near the railway bridge by Rampart Road was okay.

But the pedestrian - who appeared to be drunk - became aggressive and the motorist drove off.

But the man caught up with him at a junction, opening the door and causing his belongings to fall out.

The man punched the driver in the stomach and on the back of the head as the driver tried to retrieve his things.

His attacker is white, in his 30s, 5ft 10ins tall, of stocky build and has short mousy brown hair.

He wore a grey three-quarter-length coat over a light blue shirt and carried white shopping bags.

Anyone who witnessed the attack at 4.40pm on Friday, April 25, should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
