THE skies above Southampton will by lit up by a spectacular fireworks display tonight as the city celebrates the arrival of three “royal” vessels.

All three vessels of the Cunard fleet, Queen Mary 2 (QM2), Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Victoria, sailed alongside each other in Southampton waterfront this morning.

There was an early morning wake-up call for Southampton as the deep booming sound of all three Cunard “Queens” arrived in port together at dawn.

Daily Echo:

Royalty also marked the occasion with a visit to the city.

The Duke of Edinburgh arrived in the city shortly after 10am this morning, a decade after he accompanied the Queen when she officially named the ship in Southampton in January 2004.

He visited QM2 while she is berthed at the Ocean Terminal. The Duke of Edinburgh shared a joke with crew members as he was given a behind-the-scenes tour of the luxury cruise liner Queen Mary 2 to mark its 10th anniversary.

QM2 marked her arrival in the port when she was joined by Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria in sounding a birthday salute which echoed across the city as the three vessels berthed in the docks.

Despite the early hour crowds of people lined Southampton Water to watch as the fleet came alongside the Eastern and Western Docks for the day of celebration.

After arriving in the Solent at 4am the sister ships, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria took the lead as they made their dramatic entrance into port followed by QM2.

With passengers lining the vessels’ decks, the trio, by then side-by-side off the Eastern Docks, the ships’ whistles sounded their own version of Happy Birthday as QM2 made her way to the Ocean Terminal.

Later today Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria vessels will move from their positions at around 8pm in preparation for the evening’s celebrations.

Daily Echo:

They will be followed by QM2 at around 9.30pm.

She is set to reverse out of her berth and hold her position in the water, creating the breathtaking site of a curved array of the “Three Queens”.

Todd Travers, ten, from Locks Heath, will press the button to start the fireworks display at 10pm.

Daily Echo:

As reported by the Daily Echo, the youngster was chosen for the job by Cunard as he was born on the same day QM2 became the company’s flagship.

The ten-minute display will mark one minute for each of QM2’s decade as Cunard’s flagship.

Daily Echo:

QM2, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Victoria, will then make their way to cross the Atlantic to New York as the fireworks finale comes to an end.

I agree, the Cunarders are nearest and only thing that Southampton is to having a wow factor. Most of us can't afford a cruise on one of them but it's great that they call Southampton home, it's great to see them in town.

Forgive me if I don't get too excited. This is not the 1950's when everyone in this city knew someone who worked on the liners.

This is 2014 and as far as I'm concerned it's just three cash cows owned by an American corporation turning up at the same time which will cause traffic chaos in what isn't even their home port.

They don't even have "Southampton" on the back anymore just so they can skirt UK employment laws and pay pi$$ poor wages to their mostly foreign workforce.

Yay for the fireworks and I'm chuffed for the little lad who gets to hit the start button tonight but please lets stop romanticising about these ships because Cunard couldn't give the tiniest toss about this city or its inhabitants, we're just another port now.

It depends on your point of view and lifestyle and interest in the event. My daughter whose babe was awake late last night for no good reason was so not impressed by the "music" this morning, especially as she had to get up for work - just not quite that early.. However when it comes to fireworks tonight she will think they are great and want more whereas other's will not be so keen.

Now I love foreworks but will never forget the OS ones over 20 years ago when they had a big party. Great for the invited but my baby woke up at the first bang, screamed all the way through and was still screaming 5 hours later which certainly wasn't great for me or baby..

Just had a run around the waterfront to see these ships – great sight, classy livery – outshines every other fleet for elegance.

Here in the midlands we don't have anything like the great spectacle of seeing the "3 queens" together in southampton or any of the other ships. I grew up in southampton and really miss scenes like this as unfortunately I cannot afford to live down there. I appreciate that people have their own views and yes traffic problems are a nuisance but remember after the old queen mary and elizabeth went southampton lost the cruise market and now it is back and generating work for local people too as well as spectacular sights.

The thing that always surprises me is the amount of spelling & grammar mistakes by these reporters. When i read a story i want to read it word perfect not littered with uneducated spelling/grammar mistakes that have no defence. Sort it out as all you county reporters are the same. You are an embarrassment to your profession.

Its all part of the national sport of dumbing down everything – and not to be taken too seriously.

Southy, why do you have to put a downer on everything in life.?......what a sad existence you must lead....I feel sorry for you in a way.....I'm thinking of the lyrics of the Beatles song...........Fool on the Hill !!
the fact off life is that any cost will end up in customers laps, and that extra traffic will cost the locals a small amount from there tax its just life. and if you can not under stand some thing as simple as that, then you will need to sing that song more often to your self.
you might even get to under stand what the lyrics mean.
Southy, you really are a legend. You moan about the cost yet accept it comes from company profits, which in this case Cunard/Carnival customers & shareholders will have paid for. As one can assume you are not among them then what's your problem?

As for doing nothing for the local economy, try telling that to the guys at Blue Funnel, who filled 4 boats with coach loads of spectators coming from different parts of the country!
