PLANS for hundreds of new homes and a sports complex on the edge of a Hampshire town have been submitted.

The scheme for 275 homes and a sports complex on the north-eastern outskirts of Romsey have been put into Test Valley Borough Council.

The application for the Ganger Farm site at Woodley comes from Barratt and David Wilson Homes after two rounds of public consultation.

If given the green light, the scheme would bring a “new community sports hub” with eight sports pitches, including two with all-weather surfaces, and a pavilion with changing facilities.

Community allotments are also part of the plan for the land off Jermyns Lane and Braishfield Road.

The developers say they have received “positive feedback” but have altered their original plans – artificial pitches have been relocated from the northern part of the site to a less prominent location in the south after concerns were raised regarding the potential impact on the setting of the neighbouring Sir Harold Hillier Gardens.

Romsey Rugby Club and Romsey Hockey Club have both said they would be keen to make their homes at the new sports centre.

The land, currently a pick-your-own farm, had been earmarked for use as a sports ground by Test Valley Borough Council in its planning, but funding has never been available.

Julian Jones, development director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes said: “We are very heartened at the positive feedback received to the proposed sporting facilities and the appreciation that these can only be delivered by an associated housing development.

“We believe that this is a great opportunity to provide modern sporting facilities at no financial cost to the Romsey community.

“The number of houses required to fund these facilities needs to be seen in the context of the number of houses that are proposed for Romsey in the emerging Local Plan.”

It is anticipated that a decision will be made in the summer.
