Sholing today tasted Wembley glory when they won the F A Vase.

More than 5,000 fans watched as the Boatmen beat West Auckland 1-0 this afternoon.

A goal in the 71st minute by Marvin McLean was enough to win the trophy for Dave Diaper’s team and the £25,000 prize money.

Daily Echo:

The winger went down the left and the ball bounced up in front of him before he shot.

The ball bounced off defender Lewis Galpin and looped up over the keeper's head and into the far corner, below.

Daily Echo:

There was a scare for Sholing two minutes from full time when West Auckland hit the bar from a corner.

Coach loads of fans made the journey from the south coast up the M3 to the capital to cheer on the Wessex League champions to a deserved win.

They now become the third Wessex League team to win the trophy which was lifted by team captain Byron Mason whose brother Barry was also in the side.

Daily Echo:

It was boss Dave Diaper's last game in charge as manager.

He said: "I just cannot explain how I feel.

"Sholing is my life and this just epitomises the 15 years of hard work not only by me but by other peoople at the club."

And goal scorer McLean, celebrating below, added: "It was the best moment in the world. I'm just absolutely speechless."

Daily Echo:

Man of the match was Sholing goalkeeper Matt Brown.

He said: "Unbelievable - what a feeling this is.

"The boys dug in, did well and took our chance.

"This is one of the best days of my life."

Meanwhile, captain Mason added: "I'm over the moon...I'm just so proud to have walked up those stair to collect that trophy."

The team will be at St Mary's stadium tomorrow to be introduced to the crowd before Saints final Premier League game of the season against Manchester United.

They will also be given a Civic Reception at Southampton City Council on Monday.

Well done Sholing BUT 5000 fans in a 90000 capacity stadium is silly. Surely the FA's dash for cash must be balanced with logic. Why not play the game at any of the 20 premier league grounds.

I'm sure if you asked any of the players where they wanted the game played the answer would be WEMBLEY same as any cricketer would say LORDS and any rugby player TWICKENHAM

Not sure I agree completely. Whilst playing at Wembley is a real privilege and well deserved for Sholing surely6 they would rather play where it isn't so obvious that 95% of the stadium is empty. If they played at Craven Cottage as just one example surely that is an example of a stadium they wouldn't ever get to play but I agree if I asked players where they want to play they would say Wembley.
