THOUSANDS of people are set to once again take to the pedals for a Hampshire city's cycling extravaganza.

This year's Southampton Sky Ride will see a day of all things cycling return to the city and the streets cleared of all traffic.

And organisers are promising it will be bigger and better than ever.

The event, on June 29, is one of 15 major events going on across the country this summer at cities including Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield, Hull and Bolton.

In its fifth year, it will see a traffic-free route for riders around the city centre alongside extreme challenges, music and entertainment and competitions.

Last year's event saw 10,000 people, from six-year-olds to 70-year-olds, get in the saddle to take on the five-mile route, which took in some of the city's most well-known sites.

The event is organised by Southampton City Council through its My Journey initiative, in partnership with British Cycling and Sky.

Everyone who registers their free place online will receive a Sky Ride lanyard with a bundle of goodies on the day and the first 1,000 people to register will receive a limited edition Sky Ride gift.

A council spokesperson said: “We are extremely happy to give Southampton residents the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic day out for all families and cycling lovers on traffic-free streets.

“The event is set to be even bigger and better than last year and we would like to encourage all to join us on the day as a demonstration of commitment to making Southampton a better place to live for everyone.”

Sky Ride ambassador and Olympian Sir Chris Hoy said: “We've made it easier than ever to get out on your bike and spend quality time with your family and friends.

“Sky Rides close towns and cities for big bike events so you can ride safely on traffic-free streets, with a huge festival atmosphere and loads to do both on and off the bike.

“They are great fun and a great way to get on your bike.”
