NORTHERN Ballet will make its first visit to the Mayflower Theatre next week with their magical Olivier Award nominated production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In the new adaptation, on the final leg of its national spring tour, the romantic antics of a touring ballet company are played out as they travel by sleeper train from London to Edinburgh.

Artistic director David Nixon OBE’s choreography brings out the comedy, romance and entanglements in this adaptation of one of William Shakespeare’s best-loved plays whilst Dior-inspired costumes and stylish black and white sets provide a dazzling contrast to the technicolour dream-world.

He told Your Entertainment: “My version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is about young dancers and the passions and tribulations that a young touring company get themselves entangled in. It was really important to me to bring the romantic elements out of this much-loved story.

“I always enjoy seeing the reaction of the audience to this ballet and it’s great to hear them laughing! The ballet is very playful and uplifting and I think many people are pleasantly surprised to see so much humour captured in dance.”

The performance is accompanied with live music by Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms, played by the Northern Ballet Sinfonia.

  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream runs from Wednesday to Saturday.
  • Northern Ballet will also perform a children’s ballet, Three Little Pigs, next Friday.
